Quick question...
I have my CDL license, but I have a heart condition. Will this affect my application for a driving job with CRST?

Hi Isaac: So interesting - we just had another Jobcaser ask a similar question! The Jobcase community gave that person great advice - check out what they had to say: https://www.jobcase.com/conversations/307da92a-06ec-57d5-bd23-04bd478e7ca3

Having a heart condition does not disqualify you if it is medically managed. If it is hypertension and it is not controlled you could fail to pass your DOT physical. So you should talk to any doctor who conducts these types of exams for specifics and guidelines.
The DOT physical consists of four components: an eye exam, blood pressure test, history and physical (the questionnaire), and a Urine sample. The urine sample is to test for illicit drug or alcohol use (not for heart medication). In theory, "IF" your heart condition is managed with medication, and your blood does not reveal abnormal systolic and diastolic readings (the blood pressure when heart is flexing and at rest), someone with a medically managed heart condition could pass a DOT physical with no blip on the radar. If you are not medically managed, you would likely fail the DOT physical. This basically means you need to ask your private physician if he is willing to sign off on your physical allowing you to drive (a/k/a: Medical Clearance / DOT Long Form). It is not an automatic "you cant drive" but it can create extra hurdles for you to jump if the doctor administering your DOT Physical sniffs out a problem. My DOT physical was actually administered by a Chiropractor. You simply need to go to the right doctor before the physical and ask him to manage your heart condition with medication.
