Work/Life Balance

For years I have argued against the importance of work/life balance believing it could be managed effectively, if one tried. The realization of how wrong I was hit me square in the face when my company completed its integration with our parent company. It was announced that I would be promoted and reporting to our corporate headquarters, over 55 miles away. With the traffic in the Los Angeles area, I calculated that I would be spending 4-6 hours commuting to and from work, each day. This would effectively eliminate any quality time with my children and not something I was willing to sacrifice for this position. I am saddened to leave this quality company but there are somethings that are simply not worth sacrificing.

There is no such thing as Work/Life Balance at Pacific Life. I worked for PL for over 25 years. My job was eliminated close to my retirement and the same time my daughter started UC Davis. A coworker was at Hoag Hospital dying of Pancreatic Cancer- Stage 4. PL called her at the hospital that her job was eliminated. Pl lost its ethical compass prior to 2010. Not in agreement with your 'quality company' comment.

Wise man. Sir, I PRAY you find, perhaps, telecommute opps in your area of expertise asap. Please know, you will have only ONE season in which to invest in the crucial growth & development of your children. It is of utmost significance that you have made such an honorable choice over career 'advancement'. I raised 6 daughters -sacrificed much career-wise -gained invaluable riches in life-long relationships entrusted to my care #NoRegrets Ecclesiastes ch. 3 https://www.forbes.com/sites/laurashin/2018/01/17/work-from-home-2018-the-top-100-companies-for-remote-jobs/amp/

As an L.A. resident who commuted all over the county as a contract speech therapist during the final stages of licensing, I know exactly what you're talking about. I lost critical time with my teenage son who ended up in trouble because his father was not present as much as he should have been and I was working. Bravo to you for putting your children's needs ahead of career advancement, a mistake I wish I'd been wise enough to avoid.

Tough break Mark Mueller but don't give up on your work/life balance conviction so easily. The only part missing from that equation is 'work'. If everything else in your home 'life' is balanced then you just half way back from regaining your bliss.

Starting over is new easy but at least you know exactly what you want in a job because you have already experienced it. That's a huge advantage over those still desperately searching for their first taste at work/life balance experience.

You can find similar job experiences in other companies. Probably even better. Consider it a temporary separation.
