Feeling Defeated!!!

I am finally going to reach out for some advice. This is a very sensitive and personal subject and one that is very hard for me to discuss, but...here it goes. I have some background that will follow me from here on out that I am not proud of in any way, but it is part of who I am because of the poor choices I made, right in the middle of my life when I should have been surpassing my co-workers. I am a driven and very motivated, intelligent, individual and am only truly happy when I push myself to do any and everything that cross my path. At this point, it is impossible for me to get a job working with children and families in a therapeutic setting, which is my passion! I am a convicted shoplifting felon and although I have NO drug charges and NO violent charges, it is preventing me from passing a background check, let alone finding that certain person that can see me for who I really am and give me that chance. I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND, but I am worth giving that chance to 10 times over. I feel defeated, useless and at times completely worthless! I know I AM NOT THOUGH!! I am a caregiver to my mother and stepfather, both disabled, he just diagnosed with.stage 4 lung cancer 1 year ago. It is my passion to help others and am grateful to be here and able to do that for them, however...it does not pay BILLS. Any guidance or advice to shift me on the direction to be a paid caregiver to them would be so much appreciated. They are completely on board with the idea. I just need some direction. Wow!!! I can not believe I just disclosed all my life to you all, strangers, basically. I do have faith that someone out there can help me, guide me and take that chance on me!! I know I am worth it and.can do absolutely anything I put my mind and effort into. I AM ONE OF THOSE FEMALES! THANK YOU ALL.

Well I know the way people can judge without giving you a chance but realize that it takes time and if you are truly meant to do what you love then no one or nothing can stop you! Get any job and do it to the best of your ability. Stay humble and the rest will come. Seriously when it's the right path there will be few roadblocks. Good luck. And give it to the one who is in charge...GOD He's got your back..

It's a shame, I am not the person, I was 10 years ago or 15 years ago. I believe if you haven't done any crimes and you have not been arrested in the pass 7 years, it should not be held against you. I too was going through a lot, after an abusive marriage . I went into a deep depression and made bad decisions, It been over 30years and it still has kept me from getting ahead. I am a CDL driver. Still unable to move on and get a better job.

Hi, Christina! EVERYBODY who knows you KNOWS you're NOT 'worthless!!!' People make mistakes. I believe it's much, much easier for OTHERS to "forgive" you for your past mistake...than it is for you! You're right. You're NOT FINISHED.
Exactly in what capacity do you want to 'work with children and families in a therapeutic setting'? Are you wanting to become licensed in a specific discipline? If so, have you tried contacting the licensing board of that specific discipline? I know for a fact that people already professionally licensed, and then commit felonies, sometimes have their credentials revoked...and after completing a Diversion or Probation program (through a contractor of the State Board of Consumer Affairs) have had their licenses reinstated. It seems to me that, if the court's requirements of you were satisfied, and you haven't had any other run-ins with the criminal justice system since then, and have had no priors before that, there must be a route for you. I've been told that even felonies have been "expunged." (The FBI checks and other law enforcement can still "find" the conviction...but expungement gives you some "credit." I'd suggest talking with the Board and the FBI and letting them know HONESTLY about your situation. They may be able to point you to a "path." ALL THE BEST!!!

I'm also a two time felon, you have to associate the shoplifting with the drug you. Everyone has at least one family member who struggling with this problem and most employers understand. 21 years clean and sober.

Have to considered having the charges expunged from your record? If there is no violent charge then I don't see why you wouldn't be able to work with children.
