Scams

Recently I have seen an alarming increase in posts from people inquiring as to whether a position they have applied for is a scam. Sadly, more often than not if you suspect a potential position for which you have either applied for or have been contacted about is a scam, it usually is. Below is an e-mail I received with regard to a position I never applied for which in my opinion is most definitely a scam:

hrmanager@daewoong-pharmaceutical-co.org We are acknowledging receipt of your resume sent to us and we are interested in furthering your application process.

I am Stephan Chang, the Human Resources (HR) Manager. at Daewoong Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd in Rockville, MD. After careful consideration, we want to setup an interview with you and discuss more about the job position, benefits and company briefing. We hope to hear from you soon.

*PART TIME/FULL TIME *SALARY:29$/HOUR

*DUTIES: Specifically you will act as an online Admin Assistant/Receptionist/Secretary/Customer Service/Operations Manager

*INTERVIEW Please set up a Google Hangout ID. Once you have created this I.D, instant message Hiring Manager Michael Bradley via Google Hangout on this ID (michaelbradley0147@gmail.com). He will be online to setup an interview and a chance to ask any questions about this job, position or our company. The interview will proceed as soon as you have added Mr Michael Bradley, unless a latter time is scheduled for you by him.

Stephan Chang. Human Resource.

Some key points that made me suspicious of this were, 1 - I never applied for any position with this company, 2 - the spelling and grammar used is clearly incorrect, 3 - Asking me to set up a Google Hangout in order to conduct the interview. I did some research on the company and they do in fact exist and yes, they do have a U.S. office based in Rockville, Md. Now, notice the e-mail address where this came from, now take a look at the actual e-mail address for the REAL Stephen Chang which is listed on the company website: stephan.chang@daewoong.co.kr Also take notice that the REAL Daewoong Pharmaceutical Co. web address is daewoong.co.kr and NOT daewoong-pharmaceutical-co.org as listed above. Now, after doing some further investigating I discovered that this e-mail actually was sent from someone in Lagos, Nigeria and NOT from Rockville, Md here in the U.S.
If you ever suspect someone trying to scam you, do as much research as you possibly can before responding to an e-mail such as this. Trust your instincts.

Can you believe the gall! Notice that this e-mail originated from the fake account of daewong-pharmaceutical-co.org, the same fake account as the one I posted about yesterday! Only this time, the scammer claims to be from CVS Health! Folks, I'm posting all of these to warn others of this. You could potentially lose a great deal of money and even be possibly charged with a criminal offense if you move forward with these types of people. Someone asked me yesterday how you can be scammed by these folks? In a case such as this, what I believe would happen is this. After chatting with this person on Google Hangout for a few minutes, you would be "hired" on the spot. You would be told to log back on to Hangout the following morning for your "training" to begin. Once you log back on the following day, you would be told that "They have just been advised by the trainer that your training can't begin until you receive the necessary equipment and software needed for the position." You would then be told that you will be receiving a check for a certain amount of money for the purpose of purchasing said equipment and software. The check will arrive the following day via Fed-Ex or USPS Express service. Of course, the check will be in your name. You will then be told to deposit the check into your account and that it should clear the following day. They will tell you that once the check clears, you are to withdraw that amount in cash and either forward to someone via Western Union or to deposit the cash into another bank account. They will tell you that the cash you are forwarding or depositing is for the "purchasing agent" to buy the supplies needed for you and once that is completed they will send you a tracking # for this. Of course, this is all fake! Once you forward the cash you will never hear from them again! And after a few days, maybe even up to a week your bank contacts you that the check was fraudulent and that you are responsible for the funds! Please beware folks!
