What to say
I'm the co-manager of a supermarket and the company is near bankruptcy closing stores one after another at one time we had 120 stores in the chain now we are down to 61. I have been with this company for 25 years and now the writing is on the wall and I feel it's time to go. I have an interview coming up with another chain of supermarkets and I'm not sure what to say when they ask me why I want to leave my current employer.

Talk with your manager above all about a writ statement that will help the other stores to understand how much that you have been doing in your career and work. You must also put in your interview how many chains of stores that are available because you tried hard to service the employees most as possible and being effective leadership within the company.

It's time for a change. And move on to bigger and better things. Good luck

I agree with many of the comments here. Don't fall for the trap...Keep the interview focused on YOU and your skills and desire to stay in the industry. Your hiring team knows what's going on today. That is why you made it to the interview phase. I would anticipate questions that start with something like, "At your current job..." Remember, don't respond like a rookie. Respond with truth, "In my 25 year experience I ... me... I."

Tell them they are closing down

Hello Jim. I can only.imagine what this unfortunate situation is putting you through. Be confident in your past 25 years experience and go forward. I'm sure other supermarket chains are aware of the bankruptcy your chain is going through. There is no need to explain why you are no longer wanting to work there. If they press you for a reason, tell them the truth. Best wishes, and be proud of the experience you have gained in the supermarket industry!

This is SIMPLE!!!! Just tell them the TRUTH and they WILL understand! A NO-BRAINER!!!!

Just tell him u have a fear of being let go so u wwnt out looking for work why wouldn't a reasonable pwrson understand that ?!!

Be completely Transparent. Who knows they might be the company that put yours out of business.

I believe you should get on your knees and beg them to hire you. Because as soon as they here you say your abandoning your company so you yourself won't get screwed they won't want you because they might feel in a time of crisis you might Abandon them too.
Right now, same thing is happening to those in Sears. You put in 25 - even by law you would be entitled to a severance bonus and there's a federalagency who oversees pensions distributed by bankrupt companies. Looks like Wally-Mart, Target, Whole Foods, Trader Joe, Aldi, Sav-A-Lot, The Fresh Market, etc. are slowing doing in the chain grocdry stgores. Odds are that your retail company will merge or be bought out by one of those private equity firms.
