Back to the Heart of it All

Hello All, I went to school for Human Service, Social Work graduated in 2005. November of that year I rec'd my security Clearance and have been working for the Gov ever since. I have don't nothing involving SW but I so want to. Is it even possible to without even ever doing anything in it?

Hi Dawnlita

I would suggest that you do some volunteering work in a Hospital Setting - this will give you the exposure to various situations that you would probably encounter in as a social worker. I went to my Community College for hospice certification. This is giving back and you will meet so many people and since this is your field, I am sure you will have no problem finding a job in Human Service-Social Work. Good Luck - Peace and God Bless you, Denise

Ask yourself what would your job and training look like if it was a perfect world, then plan out the steps to get there. Oh, P S.- make it subject to tweaking!

Another idea- transfer to the VA then get them to pay for MSW school! You could go for free I bet and then be a social worker for the VA!!!

Manager Customer Services at Uspsnixamo

I had worked for 27 years for the US Postal Service. I had completed my masters in human services in that time. In 2014 I retired at only 49 from the post office and then took a job with the Missouri Department of Social Services. I am now a case worker for Children's Division. I love it and feel like I am now making a difference in others life.

Yes. With your degree definitely. There may not be many opportunities in GA, but I have researched the same, here in Dallas Ft Worth and there is a BIG need, but you must have the degrees you have. It may take a leap of faith and move to Texas to get what you are looking for.

Yes. Apply for case management type positions in which you will learn first hand about issues facing clients while developing valuable skills that are basic to social work. I was in the field of case management for 8 years and it was the most valuable skill I have learned. I enjoyed this work very much. Many aspects of case management are also transferable to other forms of work and you will development excellent documentation skills that arise from your insight and work with clients. Case management helps you to develop critical thinking skills as well.

Hi Dawnlita,

Since you mention you have been working for the government since you graduated, maybe you can transfer your skills from there, along with your SW background and look at SW positions at your local VA? That might be a good merger of skills and experience to check into!

Hey dawnlita I wish I had information for you. But im a social work and anthropology undergraduate student in Dallas Tx im going back to get my degrees I have 15semester hours in basics and probably have to take some upper senior couarses and im 58years old. I took care of my mom who was terminally ill with dementia for eight years. What I want to say is dont give up sw can be a rewarding experience. Maybe you could look into indeed jobs, monster.com or see if your present govt job could led to sw and if you're willing to locate or travel you could look into the red cross or fema jobsites. At least you do have a govt job in human resources that would give you experience and maybe led to other sw fields even graduate school best of luck
