Question

So I've been at my job since the beginning of July. We have a very high turnover rate and I was looking to get atleast full time since I'm currently part time. Well my Store Manager was pushing for me to get that position but a hold was put on it because we were getting a new District Manager. We were without a new DM for about a month and then my Manager told me he was pushing it through once again since the new DM was assigned. Well I had worked with the new DM once at one of our other locations instead of my home store and at the time he was trying to get me to come work at the location he was at because he like my work ethic. I did my job and I helped out other places when needed. Well after he became the new DM he spoke to me about my Manager pushing for full time for me and I told him yes I was looking forward to that. He said that I needed to improve my attendance. Understandable but that's all he stated. Well as of yesterday I'm informed that I'm not able to get full time because the DM doesn't approve of my appearance. I work around car parts and change batteries and bulbs and get grease on my uniform. Due to me doing my job he says that my uniform disqualifies me from full time. Also he doesn't want me representing the company because of that. I'm thinking of going to HR about this. What should I do? Any ideas on how to handle this issue?

Give it another try and wear gloves, something over your uniform for like 2 or 3 months then speak on your own behalf once more while also improving attendance. If he gives another excuse, I would put in for another job, then before my departure, go to HR( put in two weeks notice if at all possible). You can go to HR now, but what if fires you because of your issues with attendance? Its very risky...

I'd say it's always a better way, Wear aprons ( plastic/cloth) that can be removed easily over your uniform being it seems your in auto getting grease and other stains on clothing....Also Latex gloves will prevent nails from being gross when helping in other areas...Go Get 'Em...SB...Good luck stay kind

Some men can't stand when women are independent for them self exspecially when they have just as much qualifying skills as men or even better. He knows that you are good at what you do. He just don't want a woman running anything that he have to manage. It doesn't have anything thing to do with your uniform how much grease is on it or not. If your uniform disqualifies you from working full time it should disqualifies you from working there part time. That bastard is intimidate by you yes i would go to HR on his butt that "ole cave man crap has left the building a long time ago and he need to quit being a dam fool." You stand up for yourself if it was possiable sue his but then the company be yours and i will drive my car from milwaukee and let you fix it for me. Keep up the good works Go over that jack ass head.

Sounds like he might be setting you up to let you go.What difference does it make if you are full time or parttime if your uniform is dirty, because of you doing your job,if you are their full time are parttime? Dirty, is Dirty, in todays times he should be thankful for someone that works.

Go to HR......first it was your attendance now appearance? He may have crossed the line with this, if your job requires you to get dirty and you are doing your job the uniform being dirty is no reason for hi not giving you full time work.

Take your case to HR. This sounds like a BS excuse to keep you out of a position you deserve.

This will not be pretty but..., If "management" is identifying a deficiency, that you should focus on correcting (improving) the deficiency rather than seeking blame which could end up further alienating your chances for full time promotion. I didn't like it (but did it) when I was told to have a spare (change) of uniform at work (in my locker or in my car). Additionally, you may consider focusing on your work practices (cleanliness). You may want to consider investing in a set of coveralls (your own investment) and maybe gloves, while trying to be neater in your daily work routine. I am not saying that they are right or even unreasonable, but if your desire is to remain with the organization and eventually go full time, humility is a virtue. Show that you are making an effort, or maybe look for employment elsewhere. The company is not always the bad guy. Good luck.

Ask yourself these questions: Is there any validity in what he is saying? Are there areas where you could improve. Sit down with your manager and GM. Talk to them about their/his concerns. Work to improve in those areas if they are legit. I would try working with him first. If you still feel like it's personal or that you are being harassed talk to HR. In the meantime work on your attendance! Don't give him the ammunition to use on you. Wishing you the best.
