Why would my credit rating have anything to do with if I get hired or not? I'm not applying for a loan, just a job!!! I think this is a little illegal, or am I wrong?

The credit check is to see how responsible you are. I worked at Citi for 12 years.

If I was not very frugal, I would not be able to survive.

Our dearly beloved Federal government made me an offer to work in Texas, so I relocated there only to be told that I do not have the clearance to work in the financial service department. I had to break the lease on my apartment and put my stuff in storage and return by driving over a thousand miles, because thank God my home did not sell. After using up that money to relocate my furniture is in another part of the country while, I am here in a house without furniture. I understand what you are going through.

I'm not sure how much weight it has on the hiring decision but it's included in the background check.

I can relate to your situation. I have not worked in my field for a year. I am trying to short sell my home. I will probably take up residency in another country. Where credit is not an issue.

It depends on the type of job you are applying for and your profession.

It is a sad fact that they can use this information. There are certainly valid circumstances.

It does seem completely unfair that they would take this sort of thing into account when looking for a job. I had to look up the information but it looks like employers do have a right to ask to see your credit information. If you consent, which you don't have to, they can request your information from credit bureaus. The credit bureaus then send an edited version of your credit report and actually doesn't even include your credit score. Basically, the employers are checking credit history to see any indication of criminal or extremely irresponsible behavior. Don't forget you have every right to refuse to give this information. This could negatively effect your chances of being hired, but you have a right to say no.

I got all this information from this site, you should definitely check it out: https://www.creditkarma.com/article/job-search-credit-report
