Can you try one of the contracting agency, you can start as a contractor with the DoD, before the hiring freeze is lifted from USA job. Kevin, since you have had a long career, may I suggest working from home or as a consultant. Your knowledge and skills will be a benefit to any company. But I feel I must warn you that age discrimination is alive and well. I did 32 years in the Army as a medic and as an instructor and cannot get hired in my field. Good luck
