Over 50 years

In 2016 I lost my job I had for seventeen years. The company was acquired by another and the new company literally got rid of all employees over 50. I taught with all the experience I had and the fact I stayed at one job for so many years I would have a good chance of getting hired. Big mistake! I have sent my resume to more than 500 employers including employment agencies, I have my profile on a number of site imcluding LinkedIn. To my dismay I was told by some from Georgia Unemployment that putting 17 year on my resume shows how old I am. I have since updated the resume to reflect 10 years plus. Still cant get an interview. Is ageism playing a part in me getting a job? My unemployment ran out and all the saving I had is gone. What can I do to be employed again.

I am not sure of ageism, but getting a job in certain fields after 45 is hard. It will not depend on skill level but how long they believe you will be beneficial, as some job require that you are up to date on newest platform and will not take a chance on a skill worker, and you know its hard to change old habits yes you can learn but some of us will think we know better. Sad but true, again depend on job and where you live. Suggestion , move, take courses-retrain 50 is not to old and learning something different is fun and shows your ability to adapt

Hi Marlyn,

I am sorry that after all of your hard work that you were not treated fairly. This unfortunately can happen in a company take over, but what you can do now is pick yourself back up (which it sounds liker you have) and find a job that will truly appreciate you.

I noticed when I went to search for some jobs for you that your profile isn't completed.

The first thing you will want to do is take a few minutes to completely fill out your profile. Make sure to include your current location, previous jobs with description, and education. This will help other Jobcasers to send you jobs they run across that might be good for you.

After you have done this, you can use these steps to start your job search:

1.Click on “Jobs & Companies” at the top of the page 2.Enter a job into the search field that says “Position” 3.Click on the blue button to search for that position in your area 4.Once the list is up, click on “View Job" of any you are interested in to apply.

I would suggest taking a look at the info on [this site] (https://www.wozber.com/us/guidebook/tag/resume/) about building your resume as they can be a little tricky to update if it's been awhile. The site is free and worth a look! I would suggest (as others have) to stick with your most recent experience on your resume and avoid anything older than 10 years for sure. Stick to the now so people know what you have been up to. You can always mention your older experience during an interview, but first you want to grab their interest with your resume.

Let me know if you need anymore help Marlyn and keep your head up!
