Heard that on age
been looking for employment for years to no avail. Thought I found a really good job that fit my expertise till my boss was half my age and was only interested in flirting and helping with the younger ladies working, so yea there is an age discrimination thing, unless you're a cougar :)

OK who is dis you looking for a job

welcome to the real world where were you before?

Having been that boss that was half everyone's age, and having been accused of age discrimination, I can only say if one does accuse... you better be able to back it up, and act your age. Meaning, do so in a respectable manner. Not in front of customers, not in front of the company owner, not like an immature drama queen. Because guess who'll be up for the next performance review?

I just got invited to an oral exam to be a city planner. I'll be studying for the next couple of weeks to prepare. Wish me luck! It might be tough even though its entry level as I'm over 50 and changing careers. I think even government wants youth even though they know it is illegal to select people based on age.

Sandra,
Keep plugging away, remember you have experience, maturity, and I am sure a strong work ethic. Those are the soft skills any decent employer should/would want in an employee. These kids are lacking in all those skills. Best of luck to you.

Sandra, I know it is tough out there. I am closer to 50 than not, and I completely changed my career path. I was also concerned about the age thing and competing with kids fresh out of college. Luckily, I had a friend and fellow Army Reserve sergeant who put in a good word for me. Sometimes knowing the right people can help get you in the door, so don't be afraid to ask friends and family for help. I ended up getting a job at a progressive university where they definitely do not age discriminate ( they have hired people older than I am!). Check around local hospitals. They are always hiring, even for non-medical positions. That is where I work and I love it!

Try looking when your in your late 50's as I am, so true these companies only want those who are young, would go out as drinking buddies so that they get drunk together and come in so hung over and brag about it or those who have enjoyed one night stands. The younger employees I've worked with are great at back stabbing especially the older employees, just to get ahead

Well: I have encountered bosses 1/2 to 1/4 my age that acted all authoritarian, like facist dictators that force one to conform to very high standards and say "because theCEO says" it is all that matters. Some of the scripts that I have been required to read were to verbose to hold anyones attention expecially on holiday season.
I find that due to the negative treatment most people get from unemployment services, they are more content to stay in an employment situation even if it is not good for them, generating the poor customer service problems people complain about.

Sad isn't it. And people try to hide age discrimination by saying, over qualified.
I was raised to say Yes Mam, No Sir etc. and have RESPECT for the people that are Experienced
and more Knowledgeable. That I could learn from these people. That is where wisdom is gained.
If there is one consolidation, it is that these disrespectful people that are in positions that they
probably did not EARN, that don't know what a work ethics are, will one day find themselves in the
same situation, then they will realize the way they acted was not so Wise. Only to be pushed aside
for the younger.
Keep on looking Sandra, you do not want to work for/with Jerks like that.
Someone with character, a good work ethic and respect for the experience will notice what you have to offer.
Sorry that you have to deal with an immature boss, but do you really care to lower yourself to his level ?. Maybe you should look for another job where you don't have to deal with that kinda stuff. I know it's hard finding a good job anymore. You will find something better out there. Good Luck ! :)
