SO FRUSTRATED! TOO OLD?
My husband got a promotion which required us to move to Saint Petersburg, FL last July. I just turned 60 and have applied for at least 50 jobs online. Have had two personal interviews (one of which I knew more about QuickBooks than she did) and no other responses except from job sites. I have a few health issues which may make me eligible for SSD but would rather work. I have over 15 years QB experience, but not QB payroll. I am considering taking a lower paying P/R Specialist position (if they consider me.) Suggestions? Zip code 33713. Thanks!

Life is like trying to get a record deal...sometimes you just don't know what you are up against. Just keep pushing.

I would suggest taking qb payroll class. But u got to do what's best for u

Read what you wrote. You have provided nothing but multiple reasons why you shouldn’t be hired. You’re disabled, overqualified yet underexperienced, you’re not really interested in the job, ... Gee, when can you start?!
Go back and rewrite not only the post, but your thinking on the entire situation.
In interviews, always speak as if you already work there. They called you in for an interview because you’re the right person for the job; they just want to make sure you want the job and that you wil be a good cultural fit.
No matter what, Jaguars Rule! Oh my gosh, I’m so fortunate! I never thought I would have an opportunity to live in St. Petersburg. I love it. And here is this job I know I’m good at! Life couldn’t be better.”
Don’t you agree?

Don't give up your time will be soon. God is preparing your position for you.

Congratulations on your 60th birthday! I hope I have words of advice that can help. First something I learned awhile ago: do not view your youth as a commodity and do not view your age as a liability. Second, don't solely rely on online applications, for me they seemed to be just an endless trail of hoops and hurdles. There was never a person to see or a brick and mortar address to visit. If I were you, I would physically visit state run facilities that have job bulletin boards with positions posted. I would look for "gateway" jobs. Things that you are overqualified for or may not like, but they get you into the system. Once you have proven your attendance and performance, you are eligible to see and hear about other jobs that are only posted inhouse. I LOVE the fact that you still want to work when there are other options like SSD, which YOU deserve. It tells me that you understand the fact that people need a place to go every single day. With that thought in mind, you know that one thing in life is simply about showing up...every day. That is what life is about. Our presence is required with a capital "P". We show up when we are under slept. We show up when our hearts are aching, our bodies are breaking and when our personal lives have become a distraction. But the reward for this discipline of showing up is that we get to bring to every situation we encounter the depth of our character, the breadth of our being, our perspective...our point of view. I have you in my prayers and want only the best for you. Thank you for writing. That's what we should all do. Talk to other people to solve problems!

Since you know quickbooks, I would look into working for Sage. They pay much better than Intuit. I work for a call center that does support for quickbooks in a cloud environment and because minimum wage went up they are forced to up their wage, but instead they are closing the site.

If you are 50 to 60ish you should know you have to network at this age if you don't know people that can help you that is bad. I was 60 and needed a job so I call a sales rep for a go word for me and I got the job. She had ask for my help and I went out of my to help her. Don't be shy ask neighbors or church members. Go luck to you.

Hi, my name is David. I found that I too had to take a job that paid me less than I ever made because that was the only job that hired me on the spot. I am looking for new employment in doing what I am really good at doing because I no longer enjoy being at the job I am at. When leaders stop appreciating you for all you do - that is when you must move on to other things that matter to you most. We are sometimes at a place of discomfort for a reason that we find out the more we stay there; then when our job is done we get moved to something else from God's timing. May the best come your way.
I had to apply for over 300 jobs before I landed a part time retail job. I too am middle aged. Employers do not want us old people. They want the young ones with at least Bachelor's Degrees. I managed to survive while trying to get work by getting Financial Aid and going back to college. I am now doing an internship and competing with the others to land a job, however, the Employer was so impressed with my work that he called HR to praise me. If you can just get your foot in the door, having the work experience makes you alot more helpful than a college degree.
