Sorter at Goodwill

Crazy donations - family photos!!

I sort donations at Goodwill and you wouldn’t believe some thing that are donated. Last week someone donated about 6 huge photo albums full of family photos! Like full baby pictures and school day photos all the way to graduation photos! It was weird seeing them since it was like seeing someone’s whole life play out thru them! I haven’t worked here forever but i guess this happens when people pass away and their family just doesn’t want to deal with everything.. Its very sad sometimes.. Other times there are good donations that we can send to our district HQ to be sold online

Hi Anne. I can imagine your thoughts with that donation. Wow. Please forward that to your HQ with the source of that donation if known. Family history is important. Also, what is important to some family members is not to others members.

I once lost all my family photo albums when I couldn't pay for a storage pod I had rented. They typically auction that stuff off and one man who collects family albums and tries to return, actually found my email and did just that, I just wish that he had gotten ahold of more of them. I'm wondering if the things that don't sell at auction are donated. That could be another way those albums got to your Goodwill donation box.

If no members of the extended family claim the photos, maybe see if a local museum is interested in them.

I used to work for goodwill and it is amazing what people dump off. Even more amazing is the good stuff that they toss out for recycling. They don’t like to spend the time sorting out and hanging baby and children’s clothes. Even though that’s what people need.

I worked for Goodwill and once someone put toxic chemicals in a piggy bank and donated it, so be careful.

Those may have been in someone's storage unit that they lost, and was then auctioned off. When the person who wins the auction gets it, they sell what they can get money for, and will often donate personal items to Goodwill.
