Laid off after 25 years with the same company! What should I do now……

Received my pink slip last week but they forgot to include instructions on how to start job searching. Feeling a bit overwhelmed and not sure how to package 25+ years of work experience on 1 piece of paper.

Sorry to hear about your lay-off. It's going to be the new normal. Unless you already signed all the releases go back to your employer and negotiate the package. Also ask them if they can offer an outplacement package, which means they pay for an outplacement firm. The outplacement firm will not do much for you, but help with your resume, your linkedin profile and will connect you with people in the same situation. Start networking right away, There are many recruiting companies that offer networking event. Looks at meetup to see if there are any groups in your area. Also file for unemployment. The extra money will help. You definitely need a new resume and try to connect with anybody you have worked with and see if they know of any open positions. Good luck.

Great advice from everyone. I retired after 34 years at the same company. I have the usual on my resume objective, then I list my skills such as Microsoft office, payroll etc. The temp agencies wanted skills upfront and easy to find. On my second page I listed other jobs I held at that company with department and job title. If the interviewer wants more information on them, they will ask. Hope this helps as you design your resume.

I feel for you Nicolas. I was 35 years when I got the message. I panicked, cried, screamed and did everything imaginable once I got home. That was 2+ years ago. I had a pity party for a few days just to get all the emotion out of me. I did all the things Claudia mentioned. I also took very long walks with the dog and went to church often. I started working part-time three weeks after the lay-off and that got me moving. Once I started an $11 per hour job moving boxes in grocery stores, it built up my confidence again. My interviews became crisper and good things started happening. There are all sorts of web sites to use and all the advice here is great. Keep yourself strong. You did not screw up. Stuff happens but you will rebound. (I worked for 2 years with one company and realized I didn't have to work f-t any more. I am now at two part-time positions that are passions of mine and it couldn't be better. Chin up!)

Any income that you received from your previous employer is considered as income to the unemployment office. So after that money is gone you can collect, or get a job and save that money. The unemployment office has their job site, however, this jobs are the same that you will find on Monster, Indeed.com. Again, relax and just go online and take a look at people's resume and job description. As for your resume do a brain storm of all your job responsibilities and job titles you attained. Remember all resumes are not alike, and everyone that looks at resume have their own opinion.

Don't panic. Take a dip breath. First get unemployment insurance and find out when you can start to collect. If your company offered you a package and can stay home in the meantime, learn as much as you can new software use Utube for this. And save save as much as possible. Second update your resume. On your resume you can write all your job responsibilities in bullet points. Take your time in fixing/tweaking your resume until its perfect. Your name, your objective, skills. Then write your most recent job at the top of your resume and your last one in the last page. Indicate your education in the last page. An employment agency would be an ideal place to start this. And remember that everyone has their own way of writing a resume. No ones' format is the best. Complete one in your liking and that would attract the attention of the reader. And create a LinkedIn account which is the best site for people looking for work. Its a professional database. And take a look at samples of resumes on the internet. Good luck.
