Age, bad background, and what the old job says about you!
I am 50 years old and I'm not letting anything get me down from trying to get a job and if the companies want to use age as a result into not hiring then shame on them because they are scared that after training you that you might end up retiring and then the training was useless! I have had a few jobs that didn't want to train you and you had to learn along the way of being employed and if something went wrong you better be able to prove that you didn't know, and that is where you have to stand up and say I was never taught this! I had one job that was a good job but they let me go on my day off, and I told them do not call me, because I'll be out of town and will have a couple of drinks and that's what happened, and they used it to firing me, but are now on the watch not to do it again, against another employee! When people say it sucks to be you and they really don't look at themselves, is because they don't want to realize that something happened to them, and it could be job related, or something else, but if they cannot get another job it's because of age then they need to look back and see how hard it is to get a job. I know 13 people in their 60's that want to work and they are taking on jobs that will hire them and their not happy, because the jobs they had let them go for retirement and that is wrong as well because a person shouldn't be forced into retirement and ask if they want to keep working and see if they want to change hours from full time to part time not tell them they have to retire. Age is being a key factor when you get older and it is harder to get work because the job market really doesn't want to train people in their mid 40's and on up, and some companies are scared of what their insurance companies might say, and that is also a problem for us older people!
Hi, Rodney! I definitely hear what you're saying about age discrimination. I would suggest that you start targeting companies that are known to be welcoming to older applicants to increase your chances of being taken seriously. The American Association of Retired Persons has a great job board full of jobs in your area with employers that have signed on to AARP's Employer Pledge against age discrimination. Hope this helps!
