You're definitely not alone. The challenge is knowing what job attributes you're looking for even if you don't know exactly what you want to do. I'd definitely think about what field you want and what type of job you want, then look into how you can enhance your skills. Volunteer, find related social groups, see if certification is needed or available, reach out to companies to try shadowing someone or getting a sit-down with them... all options to get your foot in the door. Good luck!

I totally understand where you are coming from. I have a degree in Management, but I've been doing accounting for the last 4+ years. I've come to the conclusion I'm returning to school for a BBA in Accounting. I've kind of stuck in a rut, basically same career opportunities: A/R & A/P, and it's the same thing, nothing new. I fell into accounting and really like but it it's time to grow on / move on. I'm in my mid 40's but the jobs are just not getting it done and there is nothing to them....

If you want a complete change best thing is go through a temp agency because you technically work for them and not the company they place you with so no high skills are needed just basics....if you do good enough over time the actual company usually hires you on

there are several ways to boost your experience/resume to get past "entry-level." Volunteer work, cetifcate programs and community colleges are affordable ways to explore what you like and to network with counselors and peers for ideas and support to change . For example, say you have an interest in real estate,.You might take a job as a receptionist at a law firm that does real estate or a real estate broker. You could get a paralegal certificate and maybe start doing some paralegal work for the law firm or you could get an appraiser certificate or real estate license and move into appraising or selling real estate. Meanwhile, it I wouldn't hurt/would show iniitiative to also look into whether your company has training programs for advancement within. Keep a postive attitude, express an interest in the business and learning more. I know people who have started as sales clerks (aty minimum wage) but were great with the customers, willing to work overtime, offered to help with with inventory and moved up into salaried management. Best of luck.

I can totally relate to this comment on trying to find a career and not another min wage limited job. When I look around for job ads listing a starting wage over $13 per hour then I'm immediately disqualified because I don't have enough education and experience. I started looking into jobs that offer management training as another possibility even if it's not in a career industry I'm 100% interested in. Firestone, for example, has a Management Training entry level position that hires and trains new applicants for retail management positions. I figure it's skills and leadership on the job training that I can leverage me for a better paying job in the future. It's the only company I've been able to find that's offering this kind of training opportunity right now.

Hi Shelitta, what kind of career job opportunity do you see yourself in? Have you made any changes to you're resume to attack more attention from potential employers? I understand your concern and encourage you to pursue that goal but make sure you make changes to help you get where you want to be. It's not a simple for process for someone who's never done it before. Years ago I was in the same situation and I went to the local community development office for help. They were able to point out areas on my resume where I could highlight more skills and the corrections eventually helped. Search online in your area for a workforce solutions or career development office and make an appointment.

No it is not just you. With more and more specialization out there HRs have not always caught up. Nor have companies. If you want specific knowledge you are better off hiring potential and training for it. However most want to hire their talent in... leaving HR departments kicking out resumes before even looking at them because they lack the specific needs of the position that they don't really know well enough to fill.
