Is state-ism discrimination?

I got asked to interview with a company last week with the understanding that I basically already had the job and they just wanted to do a formal interview for legality's sake. While I was waiting I struck up a conversation with the receptionist. At one point I mentioned that I'm originally from California and she said "uh oh, (interviewer) always says he's never met a Californian he likes" which I took as a joke. Towards the end of the interview I did casually mentioned my hometown and then the interviewer started asking me some weird questions about my family. One week later, it turns out I didn't get the job. Is judging someone like that based on their home state considered discrimination?
