Carhop at Sonic Drive In

Messed up but the customer was so nice

So I started last week at Sonic and it’s been pretty good so far. My supervisor has been nice and my coworkers are super helpful. I went to bring out a customer their drink orders and tripped right next to their door… half of their drinks went in the car and spilled ALL over her pants and I felt SOO bad.

I can’t believe I did this!! I apologized again and again and brought her paper towels to help clean and and even offered to pay for her dry cleaning. She wouldn’t let me and was really understanding. I was so stressed out about it but she made my day so much better even though I probably ruined hers..

Has anyone have a similar thing happenn to them?

Overnight Supervisor at Quartermaster Deli

Oh you poor baby! It's so hard to get through the first stages of a new job but you will, promise. When I was in college I worked at pizza hut. One night my longtime boyfriend - who had just recently broke up with me - came in with his new girlfriend and her family. They sat at a table in my section and the waitress who had the other tables refused to trade with me. That's another thing, you're occasionally going to work with awful people. Anyway, I have to take their order and bring drinks and manage to survive that. The cook that was making their order, was one of my best friends. He'd been there for me through the tears of our break-up. I never thought he would do what he did. So as I said, got the drinks and order taken. When their food was ready, I stoicly took it to their table. A few minutes later, then waived me over. One of the things they had ordered was a large pizza combo called "the works." I had asked my friend to really do a good job, and boy had he outdone himself! They were all pointing at this pizza with horrified expressions and as my eyes adjusted to what they were seeing, I was ready to run away with embarrassment. A big jumble of bloody bandaides. Circular still, like they had fallen off the fingers using them. I couldn't breath. I couldn't speak. They just got up and walked out, like I was invisible, throwing some cash on the table as they went. I looked toward the kitchen and saw my friend laughing and doing the thumbs-up. He had done this on purpose! In some twisted way of thinking he was getting back at them for me...... I didn't think I would recover, but I did. Now I can laugh about it.

Chef/Owner at 51 To Go

I've been the recipient of a waitress spilling drinks on me and my son. It all depends on the person and how the "spiller" reacts. We knew that it was totally an accident and our server was super apologetic. We wiped the drinks off, dried ourselves off as best as we could and enjoyed our meal. The waitress wanted to pay for our dry cleaning but it wasnt necessary but appreciated that she even asked. When the bill arrived, the manager came over and comped the meal. We told him that it wasnt necessary but he insisted. He said that most folks would have been highly upset about that spill but not only were we not upset, we made a bad situation funny because of how much we laughed about it. I'm sure that our server appreciated our humor as she looked totally embarrassed initially. And yes, we still tipped her well. We still go to the restaurant and the waitress now promises to not spill when she sees us coming in! Lol. Gotta love it.

Hey @Karina Thompson

It is such a great story. Some people know how hard working in a restaurant is. They are understandable.

Everyone makes mistakes. We are human. Don't be too hard on yourself! At one of my first bartending jobs, I had a group of regular customers that came in daily. It was their boss's bday and I went to the back to get his birthday cake that they had brought in for him (special made) and while I was lighting the candles a server ran by and bumped into me and dropped the cake on the floor! I cried for hours ab it! My restaurant gave them a whole new cake for free but I still felt awful! In the grand scheme of things it wasn't that big of a deal, my regulars were not upset at all and teased me ab crying over it. Everyone makes mistakes. Don't sweat it! It won't matter to you in 5 months or 5 years so don't let it rob your joy! Get back out there and do your best!

sort of. when I was a waitress at 16, I usually worked mornings. One day I was working dinner hour and I had two 'older' ladies come in (eek, probably the age I am now). anyhow, since I didn't usually work dinner, I forgot all the things I was supposed to bring, A1, etc. they had to keep asking and they were so apologetic. I apologized profusely and explained I usually worked mornings. When they left, they gave me one of my best tips ever!

I worked in a pie shop when I was younger. We had to carry large trays out with the food on it, which I hated -- I always liked to line the plates on my arms, much better control that way. Anyway, I had a big tray full of pies for one of my tables and when I got to the table, instead of letting me put the tray down and take my time to unload, one of the customers took a piece off, unbalancing the tray, and a piece of pie slid right into his pocket. He tried to get all mad at me, until all of the other folks at his table and some from surrounding tables started laughing and told him he should have kept his hands to himself. He ended up laughing. I ended up still receiving a good tip and he became one of my "regulars". We are all human. We have to laugh at ourselves sometimes.
