Seniors return to school to become social workers
I was told to get a degree in social worker as they are always needed and age would not be an issue, so I went. I've been looking for employment for nearly a year and every interview is done by young women who don't seem interested in hiring me. Is it an older person intimates them? Is it that they feel an older person won't fit in with their team of 20-30 year olds? I'm not the only one this happening to. The older students in my class that graduated are also having the same experience! I am considering to ask them in my next interview, "Does my age bother you and if so why?" Wonder if they will be honest. It's a real shame that age would be a problem. Energetic seniors have lots to offer by experience in life lessons. I just don't understand why it is so difficult to find a job in social work!!
One of the problems is that the interviewer can't answer your question truthfully regarding age, as it would be documented proof of age discrimination possibly. It is unfortunate that age is such an issue, but some people can't get past it. I am 58, and I don't see age as an issue, but I have been in interviews where I can see the interviewer is uncomfortable with my age. However, it doesn't change anything. You still need a job, and you can't change your age, but once a year, so look for a niche opportunity where age isn't an issue. Good Luck...
Hi Madeline, I think it's a shame that this has been your experience after your well intended time and exspense of school. In my opinion an older social worker would be full of experience, valuable experience. I wouldn't give up. They cannot tell you anything about why you weren't selected. If it were me, knowing that they would dance around answering honestly just come out and mention why she wouldn't be an asset to Social Work. Document every interview. It is discriminative. Good luck!
