The Hardest Part Of Job Searching

I did not expect the economy to be so poor in Florida still. I don't care what the mayor says about job growth and "unqualified people" not getting hired. I am over qualified in my area, there are no jobs because companies are not seeing revenue due to low inflation. Dont get me wrong, billions of dollars are being spent on more high rise apartments and College expansions. Where are the kids going to work? New Tampa Bay Bucs Stadium?

Those people can be paid less than your experience would demand. If you were to indicate accepting a lower salary they assume you won’t stay if you were to be offered better. It’s not only in Florida either. It’s trending unfortunately. I just accepted a straight commission sales job in a predominantly male field so that I can generate some income. Unemployment continues to accuse me of filing incorrectly, and being paid anyway. Good thing I kept proof records. So was shorted 2 weeks pay and am glad to get out from under that program! Thankful to have time to job search in my field but my “over-qualification” is clearly ageism because my 1st career was raising children. I am competing with recent grads the age of my youngest kids. They get hired but my classmates who went back to school after the military do a lot of work for Starbucks!

You are absolutely right I have been in search of a job here in Tampa for a whole year all I have gotten was your are over qualified. But there are so many people willing to accept these low salaries. That don’t have the qualifications nor education to do the jobs but they get hired immediately. Florida is so behind in the times it’s ridiculous. Ex specially when you come from the north and you know better

Yes, I live here in Florida as well and the wages they are trying to pay is ridiculous. In 2003 when I moved here I started at 11.50, but I kept looking. Even today you have some employers still trying to pay under 10.00. You would think working for the State of Florida you would have a decent salary. Wrong! The county pays more than the state. Companies move to Florida to pay low wages (retirement state). The only thing I can tell you is know your worth and do not just settle for anything.

Ah yes, another Governor Bald Headed MF Scott success story. Listen, it's not you. I live in the Tampa Bay area. We're over-saturated with "service-sector" jobs - from Wal-Mart to restaurants to hotels, etc. The problem is that most of these jobs are low-wages and low skill. Of course, Governor Scott is happy to deny food stamps, welfare, and any other type of aid and if you can't find a job then it's your fault according to him. I can't wait until he's gone and I don't know he got re-elected with an approval rating of under 40%. So, unless you're a civil engineer, the options are few for you this moment. When we get a governor who believes in expanding the base of our economy instead of sticking it to his constituents, then things will change. I really wished that Hurricane Irma would have turned into Cat 5 storm and focused in on one area: TALLAHASSEE. Doesn't help that both legislative houses are ruled by Republican supermajorities and you got a dickheads like Corcoran and DeSantis running around this state. You're not alone - I've been unemployed for 14 months and now the local CareerSource is embroiled in a "fudging the numbers" scandal.

Amen to your comments and I have loved in Florida for over 30 years and have not seen how LOW salaries have gotten. People are so discussed they are hopping jobs every 6 months. The companies are offering 9 dollars an hour and think this is fabulous! No one can live on this when the apts are off the charts to rent! The Governor brags on all these companies are coming to Florida with HIGH pay, oh really, these are a few managers making $40,000, not the worker bees! I also blame the frustration on HR and recruiters looking for they say qualified people. They look at a job title, but the overall meat as saying, oh this person is great in customer service, or sales, but it says something else to give a person a chance on experience in the workplace as seniors knowledge! We need to broaden the criteria. The companies have to let their bottom line greed up a little and qualifications and they will get their qualified people! College grads for teaching are leaving the state, because of the pay! Not helping the overall education system!
