Answering a question.

I am not happy in my current position. I have been there for over 8 years. If I get an interview and they ask why are you looking for another job . What do I say?

Are you looking for a new job using your current field, or something new? I personally just had a interview, totally unrelated to my work experience. Doing the interview I was asked what my interest, was in working for their company? I told the interviewer my interest was to learn a new field of work. Make sure you don't talk negative, about your current employer. Be honest let your current work experience show your dedication and loyalty be positive while answering questions. Ask questions about the company also it will help to show you are engaged doing your interview. Hope this helps good luck

Well, Emily and Sharon took the words out of my mouth. If I can offer anything, is for you to bring to your new position your skillset, your professional experience, a fresh perspective, and leave the baggage behind. And whatever you do, don't fall into that rut they call "comfort zone". Remain out of it and seek challenges.

Hi Laura, I was also in the same position as you and believe me, when you unhappy at work and loathe at the fact that you have to spend 8 or so hours there a day, it becomes frustrating. If you do get an interview and they ask why you are looking for another job, just tell them that you are looking for a challenge and that working there for 8 years, youve pretty much succumbed to knowing how to do your job in your sleep. NEVER put down your boss, manager, coworkers, company or anything. That answer has always helped me. Good luck

I think it depends on what your reasons are for being unhappy, but in general I personally believe that transparency and honesty are the two most important traits during an initial interview. Without getting into too much detail about your current company, let them know what you are looking for in your next position that will allow you to grow professionally. By consciously assessing the core reasons why you aren't happy and then being able to articulate them clearly, you will also allow both you and your interviewer to gauge whether you would be happy at their company or would encounter the same issues. It also shows that you have taken a lot of thought about potentially leaving and have assessed the pros and cons.

Good luck!!
