What is the next step?
I’ve been working as a concierge since my senior year in high school. Three years later, I still love the ability to help guests feel welcomed and make their stay comfortable. I was wondering how can I show my manager that I am ready for the next step without having a degree?

Great Attitude! Sometimes the quickest way to get something is to ask for it. Send your boss an email requesting one on one time to discuss career progression opportunities. Don't expect him/her to have all the answers though. Think of 2-3 reasonable responsibilities you can add onto your daily workload where you can show off your leadership skills. Be open to a gradual and not immediate development process.

Dear Joaquin, Thanks for your inquiry. I agree completely with Enrique Infante remarks -- so please see mine as springboarding on those. Here is my advice -- when you next meet with your manager to discuss your 'next step' be sure to have in hand a 1-2 page white paper that describes how you "could do more and add additional value by leading some of the following new initiatives." This white paper (with your name and date on it!) could be as straightforward as a list of bullets, that serve as talking points. But importantly, having written them down (and polished them over and over!) they represent a tangible artifact that not only has existence, it can be read and re-read by others, such as even-higher-ups. Please excuse the ageism with my next remark -- but you should guard against the belief that because you are young your views might seem 'unseasoned' (and thus you talk yourself out of writing such a thought piece). No. Don't allow yourself that pity party -- as from my six decades of experience in military, industrial and academic organizations, good leaders are always on the look-out for next-gen with fire in their eyes. In short, "Go!"
