Welder at Kwiecien Fabb

I got fired yesterday. I'm a welder.

I got this job at a small fab shop. They said that they needed a fab guy and a welder. Well,I'm a welder, been a welder for over 25 years. Yesterday, the boss pulled me in the office and tells me that I'm not "artsy" enough for the job. I didn't go to college to be an artist, I went to learn how to weld. I understand that some people think a bad weld is just as good as a proper weld. IT'S NOT!

They should of described what they wanted from you better before they hired you . If you have been welding as long as you have I'm sure you know what you're doing. What do they make that requires you to be an artist too

Not sure where you live, but if you can move to Houston, the marine oil industry is booming. They're always hiring qualified welders. National Oilwell Varco (NOV) is one of the largest, but there's also Occidental Petroleum, Phillips 66, Halliburton, Apache, Oceaneering, etc. If you work offshore, you'll probably have to undergo helicopter egress (escape) training, but most marine oil companies pay for that.

Please define artsy enough??? That’s no reason to fire a welder I know if you was messing up on the job with crap welds or catching things on fire with sparks all the time or not following safety regulations then those are reasons to fire someone. Sounds like the boss didn’t know what he was doing. Any where you look you can find help wanted signs for welders it’s a skill set not a lot of people do know a days it’s in heavy demand . Like electricians , plumbers, pipe fitters and carpenters also the oil companies are looking for welders as well to work on the pipe lines if your scuba hard hat certified( dive certified) and don’t mind working off a oil rig in the ocean they will pick you up in a heart beat as well.

Im sorry. From experience it is the best for you and not something you did. So what to do? Gripe about it TODAY. Breathe. Sleep in tomorrow, apply for unemployment. Breathe. Do something you havent had time to do because of work. Why??? Because you will be employed again soon. While waiting for Unemployment apply to their job boards. You are in a much needed market, including Govt Fema jobs!!! Breathe. This can and will be a good thing! And again.. Breathe.

Hi Dean Mitchell - that sucks. Sorry to hear about it. I think at the end of the day, though, you'll be better off. It sounds like you want to make great welds that are structurally sound and hold, whereas they want to make art pieces. Both are fine, but are not on the same page.

I did a quick search here on Jobcase and found these welding jobs hiring in your area. Be sure to apply to any that interest you.

To search for more jobs, follow these steps:

1. Click on Jobs & Companies at the top of the page, or head over [here] (http://www.jobcase.com/jobs/search)

2. Enter a job into the search field where it says Job Title, Keywords, or Company.

3. Add in your location by filling in your City and State OR zip code. Then click the magnifying glass to search.

4. Once the list is up, click on “View Job" of any you are interested in and then apply.

Best of luck Dean. Please let the community know if you need anything!
