Changing the way I look to get a job

I am a 46 year old woman with many years experience in office administration. I was being passed over for positions that my qualifications exceeded the requirements. At first, I thought that it was the fact that I might be over-qualified. However, I found out that with my grey hair and no make-up, even with professional clothing, maybe I was delivering the wrong message to potential employers. So I went to the salon, got a cut and color, and bought make-up. I had an interview today with my new look and another one tomorrow. Hopefully, my new look (which I might say bolstered my confidence) will give me the edge. What do you think? Are employers swayed by a more youthful image even if the applicant has the skills and experience needed?

Unfortunately some interviews are treated like a fashion show where the best dressed, best hair and best smile wins the prize

Smart employers are always attracted to well groomed job candidates especially for customer/client facing positions but I wouldn’t necessary say they limit themselves to just a “youthful” appearance. Grooming yourself up before interviews or any important activity in life is a great way to boost your confidence but remember the right job for you will hire you for the right reasons. Skills and talent will always supersede appearance. Best of Luck!

Yes, you should dress in a professional way always if you work in administration or any type of office work. When I worked in collections we had to dress professional even thou we spke to people over the phone. When I worked waahouse we could wear jeans and t-shirts. Always dress professional for interviews
