Inside Two Amazon Jobs That Most People Can Get

For anyone struggling to find a job, Amazon can be the answer as it has a number of opportunities that don't require an interview or a resume. While getting the job is easy, it is no secret that the work itself can be very demanding. With that said, building a work history with a well-known company like Amazon can unlock many opportunities in the future.

Fulfillment Associate:

Job Requirements - You have to be 18 years or older and be able to stand/walk for extended periods of time, frequently push, pull, squat, bend and reach, and lift up to 49 lbs, with or without reasonable accommodation. Must be able to pass background check and drug test.

In this role you work inside one of Amazon's massive warehouses which can be as large as 18 football fields and full of shelves, machines, and boxes. Fulfillment jobs focus on selecting, packing and shipping customer orders. There are three primary roles: "Picker" - finds items on shelves with a scanner, "Stower" - places bins of items on shelves for picking, or "Packer" - take picked items and package them in boxes for shipping. Being successful means quickly completing each of these jobs in order to hit a quota.

Working in a warehouse is very physically demanding and not for everyone. Workers are expected to walk 15-20 miles a day in a giant warehouse and physically move hundreds of items during their 10-hour or 12-hour shifts. Working at Amazon is all about speed - your scanner will be constantly beeping to keep you moving to the next item and breaks are short and infrequent.

However if you are able to handle the demands of the job, the pay and benefits can be good as hourly rates can start as high as $15 an hour and benefits such as healthcare, retirement, and paid time off are available to full-time workers.

Amazon Flex Driver: Job Requirements- You must be at least 21 years old and have a valid license, a social security number, a qualifying vehicle (4 door sedan - SUV / Van preferred), proof of auto insurance, and a smart phone.

As a Flex driver, you are an independent contractor using your own car (which must be at least a 4 door sedan) to deliver Amazon orders from warehouses, stores, or restaurants to offices and homes. Drivers sign up for 3-6 hour blocks of time in which they must navigate busy streets, neighborhoods, and offices to complete a set of pre-determined deliveries.

The only requirements for this job are that you are 21 with the ability to lift 70 lbs and have a driver's license and a car. What makes this job special is its flexibility. You can work as much as 7 days a week. Either schedule all your deliveries ahead of time, or pick them up whenever you have a free block of time.

Drivers are responsible for their own insurance, gas, tolls, and maintenance. Other cons include working alone, adding wear and tear on your car, and dealing with difficult delivery routes and instructions. However, earnings are solid starting at $15 an hour but can go up to $18 to $25 an hour. You are paid for the full block of time no matter how long it actually takes you to complete the deliveries.

An average of only $20/hour to drive my own car, pay for my own mileage, gas, oil, tires insurance and be pushed, pushed, pushed to get it done? That is crazy!

The IRS calculates the cost to operate the average car at something in the range of 50 cents per business mile driven. If you drive just 100 miles per day, that is a calculated cost of $50. If you work 6 hours and average $20/hour, that equals a gross pay of $120. $120 - $50 = a net pay of $70 for 6 hours of work. That is a net income of less than $12/hour .... and before income taxes.

And what happens if you are ever involved in an accident or get a speeding ticket ....? It is ALL out of your pocket.

Driving for Amazon does not sound like a profitable venture UNLESS Amazon supplies the wheels.
