I feel sick at work. I have a headache. Should I tell my boss that I want to leave for the day? Can I make the hours up on the weekend? I don’t have a lot of vacation days.

So yesterday I couldn’t sleep last night because I have another part-time job. And today I come in and I have a huge splitting headache. And I don’t have a lot of vacation days. I’m going to vacation in 2 weeks and it might look bad if I suddenly took the day off.

Hello Sandra

The thing about working two jobs is that you have to make sure your taking good care of yourself; from staying hydrated to getting enough sleep. Your body cannot push forward if its not adequately cared for. The one thing you don't want to do is torture your body when its in a non-compromising position; if you are indeed unable to complete your scheduled task and you have tried everything to feel better, then you must let your supervisor know and then proceed with exiting the building. Either you'll fix the situation now while the situation is small or you'll find yourself out for a longer period of time. We have to take care of ourselves at every turn; your supervisor will understand and it doesn't hurt to offer to make the time up, shows determination. Now, on the other hand, if you have a habit of calling in or leaving early then yes, they will probably look at you as trying to get over, especially since your vacation is coming up. Always be very careful in your conducting of self, you never want people to view you in a negative light...hope this helps and enjoy your vacation, get plenty of rest...

Many times headaches can be caused by dehydration. Taking some pain reliever and plenty of water can provide relief. As far as making up the time, that would need to be worked out with your supervisor. Only you can know if you can function with your headache. If the headache is tension related, take a few minutes and look forward to your vacation this should relax you somewhat and also maybe give you some relief! Hope you feel better soon!

Hi Sandra, Is there something you can take to help the headache? I know it can be awful, but I think unless it's a migraine that's causing more issues, it would be better to work through it. But if you actually feel sick, then definitely head home! And if you're work is something you can do from home, maybe you can take stuff with you and work a little bit when you feel better after a little rest.
