Happy Holidays

Hi everyone, I hope your holidays have been great. My name is Rob Harwood, I have worked in the IT field for around 10 years. Last October I was laid off by my company. It was tough but I won’t let that get me down. I have gotten used to rejection lately as time and time again I have heard that they want someone else. I am a hard worker and want nothing else but somewhere to work and be a valuable asset. Thanks for reading and if you know anyone that needs a valuable IT guy let me know. Thanks! And have a great holiday

Do what I did. Use your knowledge to consult or enter an apparently unrelated field that just happens to rely heavily on computers.

Robert, Corporate America does nothing but lie and deceive the public by saying there is an IT workers shortage all the while laying off American citizens and hiring foreign workers at less then half the cost. About 90% of these foreign hires have seriously exagerated resumes and they don't know half of what the job requirements state for that position. I've worked in IT for over 20 years (VB/Delphi/Java developer/Automated and manual software tester) bachelor degree in Computer Information Science and a dual masters degree in MIS and BA) so don't say I'm not qualified. Oh did I forget to mention that I have over 17 years active army military service, So I'm a veteran with a distinguish military career. But corporate america could give a crap less about all that when you are in competition with foreign IT workers. It ticks me off to no end when a corporate recruiter and hiring manager tells me "thank you for your service". Just makes me want to throw up in their lap. Its such a slap in the face when they say that after an interview where I know I aced it and then not to even get a courtesy rejection call. .

I have seen so many similar fellow american workers like myself out of work so often. I use to think that it was it was a racial issue with me being African American persuasion, but that isn't the case in IT, Its all about cheap labor and cost. Basically its the new form of slavery for hire. It's the exact same situation since the early American settlers enslaved Africans to work in the fields where white and American native labor was too either expensive or very difficult to handle. What astonishes me the most is that many studies and white papers have been done showing that Foreign workers present a host of problem which prevents it from being cost effective but yet corporations continue to displacing US citizens.

What we need to do is stop the H1B visa program that allows these poorly skilled foreign workers from entering the country. I for one will personally write a letter of thanks to the White Hose thanking then for doing so. This issue has been present since the Clinton administration where all the politician and corporation are more then aware of the fact. We need to stop the H1B visa program immediately. Since 2008 a many young American students entering college don't want to go into IT degree programs because they know it would be very difficult to find entry level jobs and they don't want to leave college owning $80.000 loan and no way of working in the field to pay it off. Corporate America created this problem and walked away from it.

I know of quite a few former IT developers who got out of the IT field because work was so uncertaain. Also when companies are downsizing IT is the first areas they look at to slice the payroll. That is because IT workers salaries are higher them many department and laying of IT workers can be a significant saving.

I always tell young folks to think twice about working in the IT field.

You may have to step down to change ladders. Go for a Level-1 support position as there are ton of those, requiring little qualifications. Yeah, pay may be low and the work menial, but its a short-term start to move up, which you will quickly do.
