Cashier Customer Service at Pathmark Supermarket

Cashier/customer service, administrative assistant

My question is I recently was layed off from a very well known company that I worked for of a total of 17 years combined, I've been applying consistently online for another job in retail of course & I put an application in twice within two months for another company which is right next door to the company I previously worked for & after a few days I received an email stating I didn't have the qualifications they were looking for I've been a cashier well over 20 plus years .what I'm having an issue with is why is it there looking for cashiers & I have plenty of experience then some of the people they hired there & im not qualified. I feel very discourage & don't have much more time left for before my unemployment runs its course any advice. Also I hve lots of tattoos which can be covered up except my hands my last job didn't care that I had them can other employers turn me down becuz of them...in need of some advice please thank un

Hi Jennifer, Visible tattoos are a problem to many employers but don't let that discourage you. Consider a retail environment where it might be unimportant or even an advantage. Check out the people working and shopping in stores you normally visit and do the same at all the businesses at nearby malls. Ask to see the manager at every place that looks good and ask if they need help. Even if they're selling things you're unfamiliar with, express a real desire to learn and grow within the business. Just bring enough resumes with you and ask every manager if you may leave one. You might be surprised by a call back some time.

Speaking of resumes, it would be good idea to remove all but the last two jobs on yours and on the profile here at Jobcase. They're all very short term positions which is a real red light to most hiring managers.

Finally, consider a restaurant host or host/cashier position at a local restaurant. Most casual places could care less about the ink and a place like Chili's, Applebee's or Olive Garden can fun with your customer service experience.

Happy hunting!

Hi Jennifer: Sorry you're feeling discouraged with your job search. Sometimes it comes down to diligent application and follow up. Don't wait for employers to reach out to you - reach out to them to check up on the status of your application. It helps! In the meantime, here are all the employers who are currently looking for administrative assistants: http://bit.ly/1Q0Xgh1 Hope this helps!
