Lost in the Land of the In Between
I have been working in the insurance industry for 13 years. I have wanted to go to paralegal school for a long time, and it has taken me a while, but I am almost finished with the program. I was laid off from my position as an account manager at an insurance agency at the end of October. I handled the small commercial accounts. They said it was not my fault. They could no longer substantiate paying someone to handle those accounts, when they weren't making much off those accounts in commissions. I have applied at law firms, but since I don't have experience, it is hard to break into that field. Or, you have to start out as a receptionist with low pay. I have applied for insurance jobs, and knowing they want a commitment from someone, this part of the interview is difficult for me to address. I like to stay where I am at and be loyal; however, if an opportunity came along, I would take it. I have worked at two places in 13 years, btw. I worked at my first insurance agency for 11 years, and was at the last one for 2 and 1/2 years. I have a hard time when asked about my plans. One agency owner said he liked that I was going to school as a legal assistant, as he saw skills that could be used at his company, but said he would want a commitment. I have tried not putting the legal assistant education on my resume, but I think one recruiter viewed me anonymously on Linked In, because the questions she asked me in our phone interview made me think she had seen my profile. So I am between a rock and a hard place. No guarantees I will find a job in the legal field, yet needing to find work. I have to work! I am the only person I can depend on for income. My brother lent me money once, but a family member told me not to let it happen again. My father is sick and isn't working. You might say keep looking for a job in the legal field, but what do you do when you have to work?
Hi Erica, while you are looking you could consider driving for Lyft or even perhaps [working from home] (https://www.jobcase.com/conversations/36571252-e6b3-53b0-91a0-5ba8fbe865f7). I am so sorry your father isn't well and hope he feels better soon!
