Going Back to Work?

My wife and I decided to retire 10 years ago thinking my we and I had enough to cover us financially through our golden years with retirement plan combining savings, pension, and social security. 2 years later the recession hit us hard so we refinanced our home and made some major cutbacks on monthly expenses to get by. Since then more health complications with my wife's diabetes and rising health care cost have put us in a position where I have to go back to work, at least on a part-time basis, to cover expenses. Here’s where the REAL trouble begins. I’ve been applying for all kinds of sales and service jobs but it seems no one’s interested in hiring a ex-retiree with 10+ years out of work. Anyone here with similar story or experience find work yet? Where and how did you do it?

Court Clerk at Birmingham Municipal Court

Arnold: My suggestion would be to enlist the help of your local unemployment office and see what they can do for your re-entry into the workforce. In addition, maybe check out temp services to see what they have to offer as well. The other thing you can do is enlist old contacts, friends and relatives that are still employed for help. In addition, maybe check out openings through the local tribal casinos and your local church and church groups to see if they have connections to community programs that assist people in your situation. Hope this helps!

Arnold, Have you tried smaller family owned business- say mortuaries, pest control companies? And AARP is a great resource , but also look towards your state's Employment services as well and any faith/church based job groups. Wishing you the best!

Director: Operations / Sales for Small manufacturing companies and Start-ups

yes, I am doing it now. 25 years experience in sales and business operation. Held several C-level positions with small manufacturing companies. I was able to hook up with a manufacturing company that was in deep trouble. Unfortunately the CEO is a cheap SOB. Uses people. Does not want to pay. So after 10 months I am looking again! Tell me where you are located. What is your background in business? Perhaps opportunities will come along.

You didn't say what type of skills you have but in addition to my comment below, my former boss suggested that I write tech books. He is on his third book now. We were both in education.

Have you tried getting into direct sales & starting your own business? With your sales experience you would do great at that & there's no age limit on working for yourself.

Yes, I lost my job prematurely at 59. Was not planning on early retirement, but received my inheritance. My arthritis proved to be too severe to return full time. Now I am trying to return part time. Either they have 10 hrs. To give u, or they want u for 30 hrs!???

It appears to me that you are a man with some skills and experience, regardless of whether you find employment, work is always available, put your skills and experience to work for you, you may find it to be more rewarding than making money for someone else.

Try the airlines and airport if you have one nearby. TSA offers benefits and a small pension. The airport is open 24/7 and requires a lot of employees to operate.Good luck!
