Get Out of Here!!
My husband and I worked for the same company for over 25 years but in two different departments. Last week, my husband was called into a meeting with HR and was presented with a decent retirement package. One problem, they asked him to resign ASAP and train the person who would take his place. Really!!! It gets more interesting, I have a meeting next week with HR and they won't tell me the reason. They just said, not to worry about it! What do I do and what do I say to these people?

I know how you feel sounds so unfair. I personally think age discrimination is the case, i been trying to find work since my layoff of 2010. Stuck in retail since then barely making it. Not right that your husband has to leave the company after so many years.

Take them for everything they'll give. There next offer may not be as much.

Dear Melanie, sounds like a promotion to me., Lani

Just be very careful on what you will decide and listen very closely to the employeers if you have a meeting with them because who knows maybe they dont wanna tell you whats happening because they want to surprise you with having your husband help you in the darpartment he was it amd put you at the department he was at so you and him will be working together you said you and him work in different departments maybe they saw both of you working hard enough with them to make both of you make a great salary together ☺

Come on guys stop being rude to one another and help each other out and respect what other people got to say I mean whats the whole purpose of putting negative and hateful things on here yes this is job forum but we should be hanlding these things like any other great person would like give each other helpful thoughts and caring about each other come on were all adults on here so lets respect each other and listen to these great people who are willing to help us design a great online site for workers who need help or are just having problems with work who need great people like us to talk to or just some great advice ☺

That does sound strange,I would search for any information on your company that would alert you to the fact that they are reducing the job force or any change of a sale of the company.next I would ask the tv reporter in your town and tell them what happened to your husband and see if they can shed some light on the company to help you make a decision to stay or any sale or merger ..the news paper is the next thing I would check is with the chamber of the local area.good luck and contact your local resources. I remember just recently I saw when a few things get'some changed the bigger things happen later.. be prepared for change..

Family emergency always works . And that's for starters . But a good one

Listen everyone relax what we have here is a company trying to save money in salaries .Due to you and your husband make to much money. So starting someone at the beginning of the pay scale. Benefits the company. This company should have more respect for loyal employees.

iam so sorry ok you can do three things 1 have a meeting with the person who did this 2 complain to the higest boss or last find another job before you quit and tell them to to eat you and your husband that's on me tell them Karen said it your right they are so wrong for this
Melanie, In my case they were not making enough on the contract with the state of NC on the project and had to cut expenses so I got laid off. The problem is I now can't get a job. I have worked in IT / Software Development for over 25 years and have been told but recruiters I have outstanding skills and knowledge in almost every area but companies won't hire me because I haven't use the specific tools / applications they use, i.e Chef, Puppet, Git Hub, TFS, Perforce, etc. I have read through the online tutorials on these tools and understand their use and have complete confidence I can learn these tools in depth but companies apparently don't feel the same. Just because I and companies I worked for didn't use them doesn't mean I can't learn them. Companies change tools on a regular basis and employees learn them. In many cases companies don't use all features of the tool or even use the incorrectly. I have argued my case that I have the knowledge of the processes in which these tools should be used, i.e. Workflows, Business Rules, Best Practices and Trace-ability. I've learned every tool I've ever been confronted with and in many cases became the administrator of the tool but yet I can't get companies to take a chance on me. I and even many recruiters don't know the reasons why this is. I have even offered to start at the low end of the pay scale because I have confidence I can prove myself and advance my pay but still no takers. I have taken a job in sales just to have an income and its working out but my passion and knowledge is in the Life cycle and Support of Software Development. So, I continue to apply for positions in hope I will be able to return to this industry and contribute. I know this is a different situation then yours but I just thought I'd share my experience.
