Somewhat frustrated
I've had people and companies interested in me but once they find out that I'm retired and over 65 everything comes to a screeching halt and I get the old "Well keep in touch if anything comes up. We have other candidates that we'd like to look at." Then I never hear from them. One would think that companies would be interested in a person that has experience. I've also been told that I have too much education! Really? Just gets a little frustrating at times.

You're right about that Jim, I've been thru some job interviews and when they look at you and find out your age, things change some times dramatically, most people don't believe I'm 61 some say I look like a guy in my 40s, still I get the old 'Don't call us We'll call You routine..

Agree!

People, people..... PEOPLE!!!!! I'm not even here for you to like me. I don't want to mislead you.... I'm here to remind you that all the crying and screaming won't get you a job. The only reason that you are here, other than me is to GET A DAM JOB.....I get paid EVERY TWO WEEKS...... So now it's your turn to do like I did. Get your resume and cover letter. Put gas in the car, get the city bus, catch a ride.... Do a cab if you must.... But get back on your feet and get you life in order with a fighting spirit. Go find that new job.... Screw what you think, feel, or how you want to insult me.... I'm working overtime most days at my doctors office. Besides you gotta eat.... So yes I am rude, brash, cocky, a big mouth.... But that's how I got my job. You choose.... But I fly with eagles. I'm not a duck.

Go online, check out the Wharton School of Business, they always have guests and professors that provide ideas for the older people out of work. If you have Sirius Radio, it is on channel 111. I just heard a show yesterday about the older workers and recommendations from the guest speakers. They know what is really going on at this time~Best Wishes, Brenda

Hello Dale, I don't know what you are interested in doing, but you can try call center jobs and temp agencies.

Hi Dale, you're not alone, my dear. The same thing is happening to me all the time. I have a question for employers who discriminate us without even know if we would be able to work or not and the question is: do we (people over 65) not to have to pay bills? Don't we have to buy our food, etc etc etc...?

If you have had any sort of jobs, volunteer, etc. try listing those experiences so there is little or no gap in your working experience. Perhaps volunteer for awhile? Eventually you will be the right person for the right people - keep your head up!

Dear Dale: It is the employer's right to select the best candidate. So far no apparatus called qualificationmeter is invented to put it under the tongue of the candidate and read the degree of their qualifications. So, the only logical base is the choice and taste of the hiring manager. I am very grateful to the rules of my country that forbids asking the age of the candidates. Therefore, at least people like you and me get the chance to meet the hiring manager and try to convince them that we don't intend to die in the next few weeks. It is not fair to expect more. I am 76, most probably older than you and I have not given up and keep trying on daily basis. we have a better chance with short term contract jobs.

I guess you have been living in a bubble because age discrimination begins at 50. You need to work around that by getting a job so try temp agencies, and keep all possibilities open. Forge ahead. Best wishes, Andrea
So I am looking at my future. I had a potential employer ask me for a picture and I gave them one. Big mistake. It was all good until they saw that not only am I old, but I am black and a woman. Imagine that. You will find someone to appreciate your wisdom. Don't give up because age discrimination is a sue-able offense and I am going to work until my arms fall off because I am not looking forward to what you are going through right now. Good luck
