Sales Manager

Take every opportunity to market yourself

I have always had a policy never leave one job unless you have something else lined up to go to. The same holds true now. I was hired a little over a year ago to be a sales mgr. for a water purification company in the Atlanta area. The opportunity seemed great and water purification is something I am passionate about. After being in the company for about 6 months the Two owners/business partners had another partner work his way into the business. I knew immediately something was wrong when I met him. I had been in sales for 20 years and I read people for a living. My gut feeling was sadly realized when he met with me after being there only a few weeks and said they were "departmentalizing" everything and my position was being eliminated. So in other words going from office/sales mgr. to full time road jockey running leads till all hours of the day and night with horrendous amounts of driving involved. When you are marketing yourself you have to approach every avenue as a "why not" type scenario. I was walking my dog one afternoon when a lead cancelled and I had a few hours and noticed a Fed Ex driver in my neighborhood. I stopped and had a short conversation because I had applied to Fed Ex a few months earlier and had not heard anything or get anyone on the phone regarding my application. He gave me his supervisors phone number who is a Fed Ex contractor and I had a conversation with him as well. Needless to say the happy ending is I am starting with Fed Ex on my birthday of all things. Not a bad present if you ask me. The point I am trying to make is I sent out my resume well over 200 times and had several interviews, but marketing myself on the side of the road to a company employee is what did it. Like I said do not be afraid to market yourself in unorthodox ways.... take every opportunity, if you are interested in a company talk to current employees at the company and try to get the inside scoop......Many times its a referral from a current employee that can steer you in the right direction.

This is a great point Mark! You never know who might be your next entrypoint into a company. Get out there, network, and be nice to people! You never know what may come of it! Congratulations and best of luck!

What a great lesson! Networking is often an under-utilized job seeking tool. I think it can be uncomfortable for people because it forces them to step outside of their comfort zone to reach out to a stranger or acquaintance, but once you see the benefits it gets easier to do.
