The Truth about Sales
Graduated back in May with an Accounting degree but still unable to find a job in my field. The only jobs available and interested in interviewing me are in Sales. The money sounds real good but I don’t know if I want to deal with all the pressure around meeting sales goals or being forced to lie or mislead customers to get more sales and meet quotas. All I keep thinking about is the Alec Baldwin scene in Glengarry Glen Ross.. "Always be Closing"!!!. Is the Sales industry really like that? What does it honestly take to be successful in Sales?

James, you are intelligent enough to have earned a degree in accounting. USE YOUR DEGREE. Follow a CAREER path. Sales is a job that is all. A way to make money and to survive. Good for a temporary situation. That is all it is unless you have a salary. Best wishes for success, Andrea

Hi James, I will offer you a job in accounting. If you are interested in moving to Dubuque, IA, give me a call. My name is Jill Crippes. My cell # is 563-552-6457

James, sales is about communication. You should be a people person. Your feelings can't be easily hurt. Accounting is more of an individualistic, lots of paperwork and numbers. An accountant can be a fantastic salesperson but, a salesperson cannot necessary be a fantastic accountant I have been in sales all my professional life and not one time have I told a prospect something that wasn't true. You have to believe in your product and become knowledge about it and your prospect and you will love it as I do. And you can make LOTS of money and always find employment. Try it - You may like it. You can always go back to accounting.

Hi, James. I'm curious why you cannot get nibbles for accounting work with a degree. Did you have a concentration in anything while in school? Have you looked into getting a C.P.A.? Insurance companies have employees that use math every day, particularly underwriters. Good luck.

James, I have more than 10 years in the Marketing / Sales Industry. You cannot sale if you don't trust yourself, then trust in your product. A salesman must be a trustable person that make researches of people needs, that people they are your prospects and due that they need your product they will close the deal not you.

I didn't just graduate but have been searching for several months and, I too, have been inundated with sales positions -- mostly by insurance companies and I really do not want to go into sales....lot of completion in the market...just stay positive and hang in there. A person in sales needs to be highly motivated, believe in what they are selling, be detailed oriented for tracking calls/appointments/writing up contracts, etc. Plus you need very tough skin...I just read an article on LinkedIn that 80% of sales are closed after the 12th visit/meeting. Determination and follow-up are critical. Good luck in your search!

Absolutely do not compromise your values! If a manager wants you to deceive customers there's a really good chance he/she is deceiving you. Been there, done that, however I would still say go for it. Keep your eyes open and your resume updated just in case.

I think whatever you sell has to align with your values and your personality, otherwise sales will not be a satisfying career.

Hi James, I understand how to see sales right now. You sound like a good person. First, I hope you can find something in your field. But, if sales is something you end up doing, it's no longer like the movies. Those techniques do not work on today's educated customers. The basics of sales has stayed the same in most parts. Those parts are never highlighted, anyway. And these days, people close themselves, if you are doing the other things right. Today, 90% of sales is selling yourself. A good person can sell. I became a student of sales, to teach sales to the exact people of your general thought and there are other trainers out there that do the same. I believe everyone can be taught to sell and be financially rewarded for what you do everyday. Example, your selling when you refer a good restaurant to a friend, but you didn't get financially awarded for the sell. The top 2% of wealthliest people are in the sales industry. 70% of job openings are in sales. There is a morally way to sell. In fact, if you are not, you won't last long. I know the response is long, that's just my passionfor sales coming though. I hope it helps.
All fields have some of those types. If you have a degree in accounting I would suggest you keep looking, try a temp to perm agency. Good luck
