I have been looking for a Professional Level Project Manager Job for a year and half

I was laid off May of 2017, I have been told by recruiter and contract agencies my resume is great and that I should have no issue finding a job in my field. I have over 15 years in Project management, team management, vendor management, business analysis, business intelligence, infrastructure, data warehousing and more.. and I am getting nothing. In this economy they say is booming I am drawing a blank. I have never in my life had an issue finding another role and have no clue why it's like my entire career has completely stale mated. I have great references, great experience in many different technologies and industries, and have worked very hard to get the education and experience that i have. I am 48 so the only thing I can think is maybe that is playing a role. I am baffled by it. I am in the Indianapolis market and I know that isn't as good as the bigger cities but my family is here and my grandchildren and I have so been not wanting to leave them again... anyone have any input or suggestions? I have literally submitted my resume 1000's of times and it seems I'm just being over looked.

I think the economy is getting better but it depends on where you live. I live in MI and I am having a hard time. I think some of the areas in the Mid-west are behind.

Maybe your area is full already. I know in my area they need my job, but then go to two cities away, and they're full. They won't hire anyone if the positions are filled up.

Unfortunately you have to move or Walmart. Several mid level administrator from Indiana moved to the West coast or pacific northwest. they all got a 6 figure jobs. They told me that Midwest is not a magnet for good jobs.

Good Morning Philip. Company needs have changed so you are going to have to review the new job descriptions and tailor you job search efforts to the newly created/revised positions. I will give you two examples. Back in they day you would see a lot of jobs for clerical/administrative assistant positions. Nowadays you don't see an abundance of clerical/administrative assistant positions. The need is no longer there especially since phone systems are automated and with cell phone and skype and direct lines people can answer their own phones. Same thing with typing memos, nowadays you can dictate, create a document and tailor it yourself. I was unemployed for 7 months, during that time I had to recreate my resume three times. I have over 20 plus years of work experience in hr and until I shortened my resume and gave it a facelift I started getting call backs. I know its frustrating but I will tell you, you will have to change your approach and may need to update your resume. It is no longer about your previous experience, this is a different job market and you are going to have to tailor your job search to get in. Also keep in mind many recruiter post jobs that seem like real jobs and they are just building up their candidate database. If your resume is longer than two pages shorten it to a page and a half. The best jobs to apply for are those that are not advertised. Keep in mind with the Christmas holiday around the corner and the beginning of the new year (lays off expected) company hirings slow down. Change something so that you can get different results.

My first question is are you getting interviews? If not the problem is resume or job approach. Get help on your resume because something is a red flag in it or the cover letter.

If you are getting interviews but no offers then you need to find out what is not working with your interview. Again it could be poor interview skills or poor explaination of a negative. At a certain age we all have baggage you need to learn what is hurting you and how to best address it. Please don't get defensive if someone sheds light on the problem, instead thank them and ask how could this have been best handled with you.....? Learn from them.

Best of Luck.

It sounds like you have a wealth of skills and years of experience. And unfortunately age does matter when it comes to the jobs you may be applying for. With these skills and years of experience hopefully you are applying for manager, lead or supervisor positions. Anything less would be a disservice to your worth. A lot of times when we lose our jobs due to reorganization we look for jobs that are entry level work. Not sure if that is what is happening in your situations but if yes, please stay in your lane and dont take less. If you are looking for work that you are qualified to do at the pay you should expect and its not happening, then its time to research the environment to see how you have to brand your worth. Think about the type of company you want to work for. The people they attract for hire and the culture. This will help narrow your search for a direct fit. Latest get involve with an agency to find a fit for you. A lot of times they will find you temp work as they search for a match. Please remember networking is very important in the job market. Meaning if you go through an agency and they love your skills they will find you the right company to work for. Its up to you to know what you want from a company and to be selective. After all you have the skills and experience to get the job you want.
