Can an employer take money they owe me?
So my employer back in february my employer paid me for 16 hours I didnt work because they cancelled two days of meetings. We were layed off so it was supposed to help us when we had to take a break in unemployment. I spoke with them that was confirmed. Now the end of may back to work they are making employees pay them back and not telling them just taking our overtime pay. They never said it had to be paid back no one knew and they never told us the money was just missing then the office told that. That is illegal and wrong right?

I am dealing with a similar situation. My boss just took me and a few other employees overtime. Went into the computer and changed the times. Now I'm trying to figure out whether I will file a complaint or let it go.

Absolutely not if they Old you by law they have to give it because if we were the ones Who ones how old. They will take it straight out your check remember you have rights

Listen if you were working and you were laid off when on unemployment and went back to the same place that you were laid off you owe them nothing they have to pay you back period

Thru can not, n should not take any money or keep any money from you you did deserve, or their fault. Though you can file a complaint, you will be treated like a scarlet letter. Still nobody can withhold any money from employees.

The company paid them for hours they did NOT work because they were laid-off. Now that they have been called back they are upset that the company expects them to pay the money back. Sounds like an former co-worker who borrowed 40 hours of PTO ( our company allowed us to do this) instead of coming back she quit. She then got the Labor Board involved because the company kept her last check - the PTO that she had borrowed. Did the HR tell them that it was not expected to be paid back or just the company helping to fill the gap with unemployment? There is a difference between a company trying to help employees and screwing employees. In my case they changed PTO policy thanks to former co-worker - they no longer let you borrow PTO if an emergency comes up & you don't have PTO too bad. They pay out PTO on a quarterly basis though.

Max,when a situation like that happens, go your nearest Dept Of Labor, and explain the situation. They have lawyers, who will fight for your rights. its a way, that employers, say to there employees, they don't have the money to pay-for your services. its basically an excuse. And the lawyers, will fight them in a court of law, or you can go to small claims court, where you represent yourself, just bring in, all your documents, or the agreement, before you were hired. The judge will rule, based on the paperwork, submitted. The court/judge only understand paperwork. Verbal, is only allowed, when a 3rd party is involved.

Yes that is wrong im going through a lawsuit right now as we speak because getting laid off due to an injury at work. Instead of helping me and paying me workers comp from me being out of work. He fired me and my wife who i had got a job there also prior to the incident. He kept avoiding my calls and messages and making up escuses. He refused to help me with my hospital bills and etc.. So i called morgan and morgan and they're on his ass like white on rice

Yeah just turn it in to the labor board file a dispute you'll get your money back

Yes, I would call the labor board.
I don’t know what state you are in, but employers may deduct an overpayment of wages from your pay. State laws regulate the amount that can be deducted from each check
