I feel like it does but I don't have any reference data to back me up
Yes. Commission is taxed at a higher rate than hourly pay. My income was much higher when I worked for a company that paid a full 40 hours and then added the additional commission rather than a company that rated all income as commission.
I work with a company that has the highest paid commission. It does pay more than salary or hourly.
Taxes on commissions and bonuses should be taxed at the employees' income tax rate. Noting that these payouts are normally higher than salaries, so they should be taxed at a higher rate. If they aren't, you can anticipate paying additional taxes, or a smaller refund, when you complete your tax return.
I have received commission checks for two of my jobs. They are always taxed much higher than base pay. I currently receive a commission check and it is taxed at 40%.
You can claim many expenses on your taxes, so it may break even, depending...

Commission is taxed as income. Why you might think that is not is due to the IRS. Payroll has to tax at the level income that salary + commission = i.e. bracket. so if your commission put you in a higher bracket you will be taxed at that rate. However if your next check is just salary then you will see your old rate.
Unfortunately it is and if you talk with a CPA they will inform you of what you need to know. It's been my experience that the employer will tax your income as if you made that amount. And this isn't a bad thing as you will see it in your yearly return and it will be helpful come tax time.
