Estimator Project Manager at Various

No second chances

I am a recovering alcholic. Was a full on alcholic for nine years. I have been sober of 11 months. No one will give me a shot. Even starting at the bottom, laborer, apprentice, nothing. I was a chief estimator that almost always made by quota. Jobs from 10k to over 20 million. Project managed jobs, sometimes 14 at a time, from 500k to 15 million. I just want a shot! I will work for slave wages, just let me make up for it. I have to admit I did have many more than just one chance....there is a thing called serenity.

Donald, you may have to move, but I’m pretty sure you can find a job somewhere in the United States.

Good Afternoon Donald, I believe everyone deserves a second chance. Continue your sobriety. Look into substance abuse programs to work so that you can help others with their recovery. Good Luck to you and do not give up.

Hi Donald, I don't know in what state your work, however, I have previous worked for a non-profit organization in recovery and many of our employees had been recovering substance abusers. Check in to organizations that specialize in recovery and staying sober. Organization as such drive to have people with lived experience in continuing education how to stay sober, which encourages telling your story and the empathy that comes along on that topic and knowing what the correct approach is. Good luck!

Hello Donald, I first want to say that I'm sorry that you have to endure such prejudice. The illness you suffer from should not determine your future, I applaud you and your strength and acceptance. It's gonna be hard but don't give up or be discouraged, God will prevail on your behalf. And most importantly keep pressing on; what God has for you is for YOU!!

Sorry, Donald. Pretty much all HR people these days swear by the adage that past behavior and performance is the best predictor of future behavior and performance, which flies in the face of a person's ability to turn things around. Congrats on your 11 months of sobriety! That is a huge accomplishment in itself. I hope someone soon will see you for who you are now, and give you a chance.

You do not have to tell anyone that you are in recovery as long as you stay SOBER, ONE DAY AT A TIME.

My enemies pretending to be team players and friends would call this 'karma.' Turn your thinking around -- they lost a good employee and probably drove you to drinking with their trickery, confusions and lies.

Donald, so many of us have gone through what you are experiencing. You have gotten some good advice in these pages, especially to not give up, Trust God, and talk to your AA Network and sponsor. Mine helped me more than I can say. I am still looking, and still have no promise of a job, but I believe today in myself, and that He has not brought me this far to drop me now. You have to keep working in that positive mindset, even though it is so hard. When I went to file for unemployment, I found a network of working people at that site who have many resources to help me update my resume, interview skills, cover letters, etc., and all is upbeat and hopeful. I have confidence now that I lost through the drinking. Forgive yourself, Let go of the past and Live in the now--the Present.
