2 Page Resume + resume writing services

I've been job hunting for about a year now. Wasn't getting too much of a response from my old 1 page resume (which didn't have a career summary and had a much smaller font to try and cram everything in there). Then after reading several articles about resume formatting, I decided to reformat it, add a career summary, and increase the font a bit to make it easier to read. Problem is, now it's 2 pages. My resume spans my entire career (about 17 years) in which I started literally at the bottom and worked my way up into 2 different supervisory roles. I think it's important to show how my career has progressed over the years, but still give highlights about my responsibilities and accomplishments for my last few roles. Maybe I'm overthinking things though. I don't really know how to convey my career accomplishments in one page. Having said that, I'm still not getting very many responses - I've sent my resume to places advertising positions that would be basically be lateral moves as well as some that I would consider long shots (but I feel that I'd be qualified enough to at least submit a resume and try), but still don't get much response. I've read about resume writing services and would really like to try one, however they all seem pretty pricey (several hundred dollars). Has anyone ever used one, and did you feel that it made a difference in your response rate (were you previously not getting many responses, and then after having it professionally written, did you start getting a lot of responses?)? If my resume is the problem, maybe it's time I seriously consider one, but it would be tough to swing that right now as my budget is very tight as it is. So my questions in short are 1) does a 2 page resume really matter, and 2) has anyone used a professional to write your resume, and do you think it really made a difference in your response rate?

Thanks in advance,

John

Hi John, Your resume should be short, straight forward and to the point. Employers only look for the past 10-15 years of your work history. They look for a well rounded candidate .It also helps if you put any volunteer work. Wish you all the best in your job search.
