Editor at Expanding Understanding

I want to work as an editor or writer of some kind.

I have a few years of experience doing these types of jobs unpaid. But no one seems to look twice at my resume. what should I do?

Hi Kyle Lord - that's an interesting profession. I have a couple friends who are editors at publications, and they love it! Odds are you are going to have to start pretty low or at a smaller company to get experience before any big names will take a chance on hiring you.

As for being a writer - that's great! I would recommend you narrow that down, however. Do you want to write books? Articles? Investigative journalism? Technical writing? Blogging? The world of writing is multi-faceted and each one comes with a different necessary skillset. Here's the one thing I would recommend you continue to do - keep writing. Every day you should be writing something. The only reason so many great authors have written such amazing works, as that they wrote hundreds of thousands of practice sentences beforehand.

I am also going to tag Nihar Suthar in this, as he is a talented writer and published author himself, and could possibly lend some insight into the industry!

Best of luck, Kyle.
