How do you re-invent yourself?
I just recently retired, after 40 years as an Administrative Assistant. I still feel like I have lots to give, but I don’t want to just pick up another secretary job. Everything that sounds interesting is something I need a degree to pursue. Should I go back to school? I don’t want to get educated for a degree I’ll never use either…
Any thoughts?

Hi Lilly!
I think it's great that you still want to contribute and thrive - and even start something new! Retirement can be a really creative time, since now you get to focus on what YOU really want to do. It sounds like you really want to expand your horizons - so why don't you start with some online classes or your local community college? That way you can explore what you are interested in without a big financial commitment.

Lilly, education is always a good thing , my grandpa said never stop learning.FInd something you really like, remember no question is a bad pne

I think it depends on whether you need the money or not. If you are looking to make money go get a two year certificate. If you feel you have much to give back but money is not a concern than certainly check out being a volunteer. Have you checked out 501(c)(3)'s ? Do know where your passions are? That's a good place to begin.

Lilly you got a complete BSN!!!! You can do anything that you want. Just name it. I think that you just wanted to see if you're going to get answers to your post. You've got more education than half of the job Case crybabies.... So what's the plan??

Find an interest or hobby of yours and work from that on an idea if you like what you do you will be more apt to stick with it .

I was just laid off after 25 years on the job. I find myself in the same position. I have a lot of experience in that one particular arena but I'm finding it very difficult to find my way to expand myself into a different type of job. so now I just feel lost…
If you are worried about getting educated for no reason, you should do some research on whatever jobs you are interested in. If you pick a growing field with lots of job openings, you are MUCH more likely to actually be able to get hired.
You could also take it one step further, and look into fields where you could thrive as a freelancer or consultant. That way you can bypass any ageism you might run into.
