Regretting my decision to work and live in the same building

My apartment is currently a few floors above the office I work in. That was great at first (no commute!) but I've become the default go-to person if there are any work related issues that occur during time off. I get paid overtime when I address these issues, but I don't like being the only person who has to respond to them, especially since it seems to happen almost every weekend.

Income Assistance Program Specialist Ii

Hi Amanda,

I had a similar problem when I was the Health Room Technician at a Elementary School and I lived in one of the communities that the kids attended that school. I had to put my name and phone number in the School community phone book because also my kids attended that elementary school also. Well, I started getting phone calls very early in the morning from parents before I left to go to work, so I would nicely tell the parents to please call me at work instead at home and I would address all their questions and concerns there. I had the same problems from my kids bringing all lot of the children from the school on the weekends with small health problems that required minor first Aide services. I had to tell my kids that these children needed to get the help from their parents.

I hope this helps

This can be looked at as an opportunity. Maybe a salary so rewarding you can't turn it down or a raise. I would negotiate and get some goodness out if it to make it appeasing.

Currently looking for work

Then you can speak to your boss and ask him/her if some of those responsibilities can be shifted to the rest of your co-workers equally.

Accounting Supervisor at Tdb Communications

I think there are a few of us who have, not necessarily lived in the same building, but were 'right around the corner' from where we worked. I agree, it makes sense to call you first. However, talk to your supervisor, and set up some ground rules and rotating schedule. You have become the convenience, which is not appropriate either.

If this does not work, then you may need to just tell your supervisor that you have plans and will be unavailable for any work calls over a specific week-end, and he/she will need to make other arrangements to handle any issues this week-end. Send this in an email with a return receipt that you can track it was read.

There is a lot of great advice on this forum! This is a very well played scenario for people who work from home. You basically work from home, that's how others view you. Since you are well past the "begin as you intend to proceed" rule, you need to set boundaries, but how? It can be intimidating. Like eating an elephant, take small manageable bites. You need to take a step back and review your values and priorities. What things in your life are important/valuable to you, the ones that take priority over everything? For many people it's family time, hobbies, military (reserve or national guard), events etc.. Some people have one or two, others may have a dozen. You are the only one guarding what you value. Holding true to your values is the key. And staying true to your values speaks to your character. Specifically stating, don't call me weekdays after 6pm, that's family time. Don't call me on Sundays, that's my day of worship, can be an easy communication fix, you can set clear guidlines How much OT would you be willing to work, if any? If you're usually a slow Saturday kind of person, "I'm available Saturday mornings", or you may be willing to rotate weekend time. That's also an easy communication fix. They want something from you...your time...and you're giving them what they want.

Some ways to set boundaries aren't as easy, for some, but worth the effort. Have you determined the value of your free time? You spoke of getting paid "overtime" but who set that dollar amount? Probably the people who want something from you, or am I wrong? The government just announced new guidelines for overtime pay that greatly benefit once "salaried" employees. Beyond what the government mandates, this is a great time to use negotiation skills. You may be able to set your own overtime $$. Again, you need to assess your values and put a worth to your time. Be prepared to have your emergency calls reduced. I think one of the most difficult boundary setting exercise is determining what constitutes an "emergency." I'm sure you've heard, "Lack of planning on your part does not consititue an emergency on my part." Take time to analyze the calls you've been reveiving. Do they fit that statement? Are you being called for an "emergency" because someone wanted to cut out early Friday? Is what you are doing part of someone else's job description? Is what you are doing at a level or pay-grade higher than your own? Are there repeat offenders? Are there tasks that need to be written into someone's job description because they're constantly an issue/over looked? Those conversations should be addressed with your manager, not only for your benefit, but for the company's. I am not discounting that some emergencies are truly emergencies! But defining an emergency is the first step to calling an emergency. There are a plethora of articles online to help walk you through setting work boundaries. Google it. The last thing I will add here, be sure to write down everything you do! This may be more valuable to you come review time. It could possibly lead to a promotion. I hope the situation turns out to be more manageable for you, and beneficial for you as well. Good luck!

Seriously you should be grateful that you have a job. Additionally you are getting paid overtime when they do call you. Stop complaining so much.
