Upgrading my career
So I'm going to be going out of state to start my career as a truck driver in November so I've put in my resignation on Monday so that the Principal can turn it into the board and I let transportation know also so that they know that they need to have someone in the driver seat of my school bus beginning November 1. I've been driving the school bus since January 2016 and I really love the job. I can't afford the salary that I receive for doing the job. This was never meant to be a lifetime job but a step up to getting my CDL. My purpose has been met so the time has come that I was finally ready to step out of my comfort zone and go to school to upgrade my Class B Driver License to a Class A Driver License. I achieved this in 6 weeks and completed my training on August 30 and earned my Class A Driver License. I'm nervous about this trip but I'm excited to be able to get more necessary training under my belt and be able to start earning my Class A driving experience so that I can get better runs that will have me at home every night for the next two years. My son is a Sophomore in high school and my daughter is a Junior in high school. I also have two dogs whom I am the main care taker of. In the mean time my husband who is a Union Iron Worker is going to have to try to stay busy with work close to home which is bringing more financial hardship on us. At the same time he has been wanting work that would have him to be at home everyday since I was expecting our son 17 years ago so it's a win for him while also a burden because it's hard for him to have enough work to keep him busy at home to bring in the necessary income to pay the bills.

tip from an owner op. don't by a truck, don't lease, just be comp. driver, Im saving you the headaches. you need many years of experience and be an asshole of a bussines man, its not all glory. youll work 3 times more and never home if you want to make money. just to maintain my truck last year I spent over $40,000 . thats just a little piece of the expenses. just don't do it right now. give it 10 years or more. by then youll know if its right. good luck. oh ya Ive been doing this 50 years now.
do it a year as company driver first then decide if you want to make a 2500.00 payment a month plus tires brakes ,oil changes and all other unfor seen problems
I too drove school bus, chartered buses and city buses. I enjoy the freedom of trucking. If you decide to finance a truck down the road do not lease with a company. Finance your equipment and Landstar, Mercer and Bennett are great places for owners.
Go to a good company like Maverick transportation. Get the skills you need safely and best of luck hope to see you out here Rollin soon. Your husband is a iron worker great I know as a owner that steel loads are greatly appreciated. Get a year or so under your belt. If you want the big money finance a truck and come to Mercer you won't regret it.

Congratulations and I applaud you in wanting to further your career. I too recently went back to college and got my Medical Transcription Certification after having to let it go back in 1995 for neck surgery that I desperately needed. I am now 61, but felt like I needed to help my husband with extra income after our business went under approximately a year ago. I also needed to prove to myself that it's never too late! My mind is in better condition now than it was for the first 40 years of my life. This career choice has been the best decision that I could have made for myself.
