How should I research a company before the job interview?

Everyone suggest that I get to know the employer before the interview but I’m not sure what kind of information I should be looking for.

Hi Ed,

Great question! I agree with the previous advice that you were given to always research a company before an interview. Your pre-interview research will not only better prepare you for the interviewer's questions but will also help you make a great first impression! I suggest that you check out the company's website and locate the "About Us" or "Company Description" page. You should be able to find a brief summary of what the company does along with company's core mission, culture, and values. I also recommend Googling the company name to see if there is any other information listed on other websites about the company. Other things to research about a company:

  • Skills and experience the company values
  • Company's history
  • Key players in the company (Management, Directors, CEO)
  • Recent news and events about the company
  • Current/past employee reviews** -- this one is important as you can learn the inside scoop of how and why employees like or dislike working for a company

Good Luck!!

Hi Ed, That's a great question. In my opinion, doing research on a company is extremely important before an interview, even if it's just a phone screen. Be sure to read the "About Us" page on their website, so you know their history and main focus. I would also search the company on Google and see if there has been any recent news involving the company. If they were mentioned in a recent article or if they are releasing a new product, it could be very beneficial to mention it or ask questions, which will show you have done your research. Also, I think it's really important to try and find out who you will be speaking/meeting with. If you can prepare specific questions for each interviewer, based on their experience and role in the company, that is always helpful. What do other people think? Are there other areas you should be digging into or doing research on? Thanks, Mark
