Is Distribution the new Retail?
Are fulfillment jobs the new path for a retail careers? I’ve noticed more new distribution center opening while traditional brick and mortar retails stores continue to close. Big brands like Macy’s, JCPenney, and even Walmart are closing stores or expanding their same day package and pickup areas at existing retail locations. I'd like to get into merchandising but if this trend continues I fear there won’t be much of a job outlook in the retail industry. Anyone have any good career track job options in distribution I can look into?

Same day or next day delivery saves time and money. Last year I hardly ever ordered anything online but this year I buy everything online except groceries. Thats a big change in a short time.

Online purchasing is on the rise. I’m not sure what the forecast is for this year but I’m sure more customers will be doing their christmas shopping online. Quicker, More Variety, and Cheaper!

I've been noticing the same thing! I read an article a couple weeks ago about how Macy's is going to be closing a bunch of stores next year and move to more online stuff. Unfortunately I don't have any advice for you on what track to look into instead. It may still be a worthwhile one to go into working at the distribution centers.
Jacob, Distribution employees still have to be customer centric like in retail but there is more of a focus on best operations and resource management practices within a fast paced and complex environment.
