Interview

I am 51 years old and have had to put my career on hold due to gaining custody of my grandson, he is now six. When it comes to interviews, being honest, I hate when they ask me where I see myself in five years. Or when they ask me if I have any questions. My mind goes blank. At this point not even sure how to write a proper cover letter, most are just getting out of college or high school, I've been out of college almost seven years. Any advice is really appreciated on how to handle myself during the stress of an interview.

Hi Ms. Trisha, You Have not a single question like, how soon can you start and what a typical day make in the position applied for and how happen this position has become available? In five years would you want to have become very familiar with organization's procedures and protocols, consider that work place a second home and become less supervised with an increase in salary?
Do YOU. Get your 'inheritance'!

Trisha, AARP supports a program of job searching for us workers over 50 years old. It's terrific! Not sure where you live, but if you are in or near Chicago, the Maywood Job Center on 1st Avenue at I-290 also has fabulous seminars on how to write a good resume, how to interview, how to update your LinkedIn account, how to write cover letters.....it all helped me so much! At the very least, contact AARP, and ask about "the 7 Smart Strategies for 50+ Jobseekers", and "Finances 50+", developed in collaboration with Schwab Foundation. All this and some wonderful people were really helpful to me! Keep your chin up, and remember that taking custody of your grandson will always be the right thing that you did! And, where do you see yourself in 5 years? Working hard at whatever job they are hiring you for!

Trisha I think you are in the same place so many others find themselves but first if they don’t specifically ask for cover letter don’t send one less is sometimes more a lot of applications are completed online or phone you could look into jobs at home there are some legitimate options and when they ask that question within five years let them know that you are beginning the second journey or phase in life and right now you are growing and learning even about yourself and how the past experience have helped you grow and mature in personal as well as professional and you would like the opportunity to see how this position and company keep you growing and maturing but mainly are you and company going to give me chance to be and meet as well as hit challenges head on that will be beneficial for all parties involved and they like this question too what are your strengths and weaknesses always give a solution with the weakness for example math hate hate it but you will never find me with no less than 2 calculators on my person no more weakness a plan of action Be Blessed and check in and let’s hear good news TAM

Google sample cover letters and print three out. Work from home to possibly make it a bit easier on yourself; convergys.com, sykes, apple, Hilton hotel as a reservation specialist. There are several others so make a separate post and request them! Doordash. Com/ instacart. Com to deliver groceries if you have a car. Request cash aide from your local dpss office ( cash, foodstamps, and medical). Ask social workers ( if they're involved) for subsidized programs ( pay for day cares) and research 24 hour daycares. Resume-library. Com might review your resume for free. Pray.

Hi Trisha -

Sounds like life is throwing a lot you right now but I know you've can handle. The one piece of advice I would have is to remember the interview isn't meant to feel like a battle. The interviewer hopes you are the perfect candidate just as you do. So don't stress because you think the interviewer is out to get you. Most or the time they want to give you a chance to tell your story and are hoping you are perfect.

By the way a good way to answer the five year question is to say "I hope in five years I will be working here. I imagine I will have a learned a lot when it comes to the operations and needs of the business and I want to be able teach and mentor less experienced people."
