Had an interview, was not qualified.
I had an interview last Thursday for CD Counselor in a county correctional facility, however. was called the next morning that I did not meet the qualifications because I do not have my Bachelor degree yet, I only lack 16 credits and will have it by May 2017. I was told everything else was fine and I would have been hired otherwise

You were quite fortunate they went out of their way to inform you. That means you got the job, just not the offer! And I tend to agree with Brian and Leslie that degrees do not automatically correlate with doing a great job or being competent. Heart, drive and character often cannot be taught. Unfortunately, this is the world we live in especially when it comes to the Fortune 1000 corporations. I ran rings around a number of colleagues with BAs/MAs (often being asked by these paper-qualified folks to do their reports and presentations for them!) however, they advanced within those companies and I did not due to my possessing only an AA degree. That's why I became a successful consultant instead. Keep your chin up, look for work at a small-to-medium size business as a stopgap until you get your degree. It's simply the easy way out for hiring managers if you don't work out "He/she had a BS so, thought they would know the discipline thoroughly and have the proper skillset. - not MY fault!"

Edward, Keep in touch with HR. Don't bug them just enquire about other possible jobs that they may have that are suited to your needs right now. Somewhere else in the company. You don't know if they will hold the job you want until May of 2017. Check out other areas within your capabilities to give you some experience. Lisa Renwick

keep your chin up, sir. You will get what you want soon.

I have also had this with nursing jobs as so many ask for a bunch which I don't have but I have 30 years of experience and think that overrides a piece of paper. More are putting equivalent experience now. Is there any way the school could help you find a job in corrections that you are qualified to do so you can come in showing that you made the effort to get that experience. Glad you got such a great feedback. Good luck!

I've run into the same issue. as I am currently one class short of accomplishing my Masters of Science. I've applied to positions with the hopes that the organizations would consider me with being so close to completion. I've received the same type of feedback from some of the organizations, i.e. "great resume, skills, and experience, but..." This gives me a bit of potential insight into the organizations and possibly some of the employees that I'd be working with if hired. If the organization simply wants criteria to look good on paper and not consider the experience, skill set, character, and passion for the position, then it's possible that I'd be working with folks that simply have degrees but lack the core competencies to perform critical roles of the position. I ask myself, "Is this the type of organization that I want to work for?" In many instances I've found even the "not qualified" responses to be helpful.

Surprised they told you a reason. Normally they just say not enough experience/ not qualified. That's great they gave you feed back. I wish all jobs would let you know why you didn't qualify for the job. Good luck in the future!

Hey Edward, Keep in contact with the recruiter for that organization and follow-up when you graduate next year.

No worries, Edward. They gave you good feedback. I would apply for other position in the correctional facility with the understanding that your degree is pending...

Why bother with the interview and waste your time then? A phone call or letter would have been better to tell you this!
