I just don't understand it. "Not ready for you, yet"
Hi all. I just don't know what else to do but vent. I am so upset about my last position. I went for a 2 hour interview for a supply chain director. The President was there and they brought the owner in (who was in from India) to meet me, as well. This is a fairly new, to the states, company - only here about 2 years. But, I digress. So, I interview, go home and send my thank you letter, then wait anxiously for a call, telling me that Im getting the offer. 2 hours later, the call comes in. I was Over The Moon! I couldn't believe it. After 49 interviews, I was the one! So, on June 10th, I report for my first day. I very quickly realize that they are NOT at the level of supply chain that they thought they were and I knew I had my work cut out for me. So, I got to work. I wrote SOPs, trying to get them towards ISO (which was one of the reasons they hired me), Doing inventory, open orders, setting up vendor evaluations (they had never done any), issuing CARs on defective parts that we received, setting up new vendor audits, setting up VMIs, Kanbans on parts (trying to get them towards LEAN). I had meeting after meeting with their current vendors and vendors that I knew personally and had an awesome working relationship with. I got their credit and terms extended with their current pool of suppliers, ie: 15,000 to 30,000 and 15 days or cash/credit to 60-90 day payment terms.I started doing price comparisons and negotiations. Just a lot of things. Here comes the part that gets to me the most. For so many nights (when I left the office after working 7a-6p most nights) I would bring my laptop home and work WELL into the night - sometimes to 1 or 2 in the morning. I worked on a plan. A 6 month plan to bring them up to the point that on Jan 1, they would have cash on hand and the owner (in india) wouldn't have to send money to them anymore. I did the forecasting, budgeting, cost analysis, make vs buy comparisons, inventory levels, scheduling, rolling inventory scheduling. I had charts and a power point presentation. I had it all lined up, step by step, what needed to be done. All of the "big wigs" were there, including the owner in india (on skype). Everyone was very impressed and ready to get started. This was on July 1. On July 2, I'm in a meeting with a potential bar stock vendor when the President walks in and introduces himself and talks for a little while then leaves. I was a bit confused, as he had NEVER done that the entire time I had been there. So, I wrap up my meeting and go back to my office. I'm there talking to the project engineer and the Technical sales manager when the President comes in my office and asks to see me. Sure. So, i go to his office and the HR Manager is there. I just look at the President and say "this isn't good" and he says, "No, there is no easy way to do this but we're going to let you go". I was so confused. I asked him why. His reply: "We're just not ready for you, yet. There is absolutely NO DOUBT in anyones mind that you excel at Supply Chain Management and you really know your stuff and what you're doing but right now, we can't give you the buy-in and support that you need. We aren't ready". I was in tears. I said "but this is what you said you were ready for in the interview. I don't understand what it is that I've done wrong" He states: "you did absolutely nothing wrong. We are just not ready for your level, yet" All I could do was cry. Yes, I showed weakness. I told him " I just left my SECURE job of 8 years to come to work with you. What am I supposed to do now? Why, I don't understand. I had to have done something wrong. Please tell me what it is" He replies: "I promise you, you did nothing wrong" Then the HR manager chimes in " don't look at it like that. You didn't do a thing wrong and no one has said you did. We just are not ready for you yet" - so I packed my things and go home. Cried for 2 days. Then I get a message about the fingerprint security on my laptop and the salt to the wound "maybe in a few months to a year, we'll be ready for you". Sure, I'll just be living under a bridge in my cardboard box - better use smoke signals or send a carrier pigeon with your offer because I won't have a phone. Does anyone out there understand this? Can anyone help me? I'm so depressed and I feel like I've been beaten and beaten. I've sent out countless resumes and had a couple of interviews and nothing....
I've heard a lot of reasons someone might be fired Kelly Beaty , but "we're not ready for you yet" is completely new to me! I think this workplace really made a mistake in letting you go! Not only did they lose a great potential asset to their company, but they also burned a bridge that day by showing a low level of consideration and competence. Even if they weren't ready to do what you were prepping for, they could have redirected your talents until they were ready. This situation is definitely an odd one, and you're right to feel taken for granted in this situation. I hope your next position cherishes the fact that you are an excellent driving for anything you set your mind to. Although it's easy to get wrapped up in asking "what were they thinking" but it may be better for you to try and close that upsetting chapter so you can find a better workplace.
