CDL Certified Driver

Great American Dream

I really want to break into the trucking world. I feel like it’s the best way I can live out My Great American Dream, to drive across the country, meet new people, and make money in the process. The problem is, every time I go to a company sponsored driving school to get my CDL, I’m the youngest one there. The older guys make fun and pick on me for wanting to waste my life on the road, and so after a couple days I just stop showing up. I don't want to hear that!! How can reach my dream of getting out on the open road without feeling like everyone is against me?

Richard sit outside a tucking company and SEE how the people gimp around in pain trying to walk after decades of driving.... Two if your determined still go to a CDL school where they treat you with respect. You sound like a very smart person if your dream to travel across the US maybe think of another job like sales or even the airline companies. I mean no disrespect just my observation. I'm a class A CDL driver. Good luck, sincerely.

Hi Richard,

Just don't listen t them. Do not let them affect your dreams. These are your dreams. I admonish folks that like to put down other peoples dreams simply because they are too in-secure following their own. Do not let their words stop you from your goal. In fact, ignore their words because that is all they are. Believe in your dream and yourself and you will be fine.

Richard, life is to short to listen to the negativity of those guys. They are probably scared you will steal their jobs. If this is your true dream!!! Then don't let anyone steal it from you!!. You will be the one to suffer in the end if you don't at least try.

Richard, sounds like they are intimidated by your youth, you might take some road away from them! all your life you will have people judge you , get use to it. the Bible says thou shall not judge, but we are all guilty of it every day. don't you dare give anyone the power over you to steal your dreams!!!! Good Luck1

Take it from someone who has been in the trucking industry for many years...not as a driver but a manager. You have to have thick skin & not worry about what anyone else thinks or says. Remember their opinion does not pay ur bills. The older guys say that because they have seen how the trucking industry has changed & to them it's not fun anymore. You have to ignore the picking on that they do, that is how it is out on the road everywhere unfortunately!! Being around truck drivers is like being back in grade school most of the time. If this is what u what to do & u have ur heart set on it then toughen up & don't let anyone make u quit again.

They r trying to detour you. If you do get your CDL your more competition. Also there is real good money in it, my friend makes allot driving. He did it for a few years over the road and now works locally both has paid him nicely, but like anything else the more experience you have the more you can make. As far as those guys bugging you do like Luis Almeida said and ignore them. And it will make you a stronger person. Its hard but try not to let anyone sidetrack you because they will if they can. I would also check online job postings and the paper. I have seen allot of companies hiring people then paying for there classes. That's the best type of class, one your getting paid to take. My brother has been working for a company for a few months now and they are training him now and paying for his test. Then if he passes he gets a raise, so check around. Its a fast growing career with the growing economy. The best of luck...
