Bruce Morris, Engineering Technician
I have been having trouble finding work because a lot of companies are only hiring millennials and passing on people like me who are "experienced" (over 50). I have plenty of pertinent skills I use the latest software. Is it because I don't have a smart phone or play Pokémon Go? I am om Facebook, LinkedIn, and nor Jobcase. I try to stay connected. I also am not abandon things in my life I am comfortable with, like normally aspirated V8 engines, Radio you don't have to pay for, and books you can turn your own pages. I realize these things are going by the wayside. If you have ever seen the movie Fahrenheit 451 I may be like one of the people that had the secret libraries in their attics. You shouldn't have to abandon what is familiar to embrace the future. A blend of the two is the best. I may be having problems finding a job not because I wont embrace technology It is because a lot of companies are discriminating against older workers because the have to pay them more and the younger workers can be molded into their company image.
I had the same experience. My wife and I moved to another state when she decided to retire early from her job. We bought a nice home in a much nicer environment than were we had lived. Unfortunately I could not find the same work with the same pay. We decided to invest in buying real estate and now own 3 income properties. It has been fun and profitable for us to buy, fix up, and maintain these homes. Thankfully they all all increasing in value and have been the solution to my problem.
